Are VIN numbers sequential?

I’m trying to buy newer stock based on KN******. Are these numbers sequentially built?

For example. Is. KN633346 newer than a KN594576?

FYI those numbers are made up. Just an example.

Thanks.

Is there any way to decode the last 6 after the Plant and Year (KN in this case)?

I would suggest looking at the build date on the inside of the driver's door (if you are at a dealership).

That’s the problem. I’m not there. I’m wanting to make an offer on truck in lot, but I want most recent builds to avoid some of the issues I have seen. I was hoping to better understand the number to determine timeline.

Thanks.

I would ask the salesperson at the dealer look, snap a pic to confirm for you. That is what I did when I found mine at an out of state dealer

The vin should be issued by date ordered but not by the day it was built on. After ordering my ram I was given the vin with in two days but it came off the assembly line 5 weeks later.

Generally though, yes the last 6 digits of a vin will correlate to the newness (what you're ultimately looking for) of the truck. It is sequenced to the order not KZ as @DakotaRam said.

Sure a low vin could have been built far more recently than the majority of trucks in it's vin range but you'll never have a higher vin built months before it's range. Ie a KN700xxx wouldn't have been built in May 2018 but a KN580xxx could have been built in Nov 2019 because of build delays.

Like @19Jake said, you can look up the vin and determine build month. One way the public can is look up the equipment list and check towards the bottom for build month.

Not necessarily. To answer your question directly, the VINs are not sequential as they come down the assembly line.

There are a number of reasons for this. VINs are usually assigned in the order the factory has received a build request from the dealer. Sometimes it's based on the dealer order code, meaning the dealer has not submitted a priority order.

One of the more common reasons is driven by the just-in-time process of delivering vehicle parts as needed for assembly. In my case my VIN was earlier than many of the other '19s on my dealer's lot. I'm guessing it was because they had to coordinate the Mountain Brown interior with a Quad Cab frame and two-wheel drive components, just as an example.

As already mentioned, the best way to appraise build date is by the build date located on the vehicle label located on the door frame.

Hope this helps.

Dusty
