Are there any recommendations for a carplay adapter? It seems Carlinkit 5.0 and Ottocast are pretty popular.

What kind of issues, if any can I expect? I know there can be a slight lag.

I tried the Ottocast and the MSXTTLY to connect my iPhone to the 12” on my ‘21 Laramie. Can’t say how either of these would work with an Android device.

I kept the MSXTTLY because it’s a smaller/cleaner form factor, noticeably quicker to load, and less lag when using steering wheel controls for music, in my experience.

A couple things I noticed that just take a little getting used to:
-steering wheel control lag. It was a little bit worse on the ottocast. I didn’t mind that much until my kid got in the car and I had a rap song streaming from my phone and couldn’t fast forward in time to avoid the f bomb I knew was coming. lol.
- when you turn off the truck, those usb ports remain powered on for some time, so your phone remains connected to the carplay adapter. Sometime this is annoying when you play music or go to make a phone call if you’re within range soon after getting out of the truck. But I’ve gotten used to it after about a month and it’s as simple as changing from carplay to iPhone or headphones or wherever else you are streaming to.
- starting the truck while on a phone call (I am not 100% this is the case as I haven’t paid close enough attention each time) - the CarPlay adapter will connect just fine, by the phone output will remain on iPhone or speaker rather than switch to CarPlay. So, the next phone call that comes in seems like the audio isn’t working, but in fact the iPhone output just needs to be changed. Alternatively you could just unplug the adapter and plug it back in, which is what I was doing until I figured out the output problem. Sometimes if my phone is in my pocket, I find it easier, quicker and safer to just do that than fumble around with my phone.

The last part is why I went with the MSXTTLY. Until I figured out the audio issue described above, I was just resetting the adapter. I figured if I had to do that often enough, I’d want the faster boot-up time.

Here’s a link to the one I use. I am not sponsored or have any affiliation with them. I just liked the product better.

The carplaylife.com blog is a pretty good resource and how I narrowed down to the two devices I tried. Here’s a blog post on the device above.

Hope that helps

I’ve got the older carlinkit 3.0 and love it. COnnects fast and does what it’s supposed to
