Hello,

I have a 2019 Ram Rebel 5.7L with 102,000 miles that entered service in June 2019. The original Mopar battery failed in July 2022 and was replaced with a Mopar OE direct replacement (H7 BBH7F001AA). The replacement battery performed flawlessly until this week when the truck randomly failed to start.

The vehicle had no electrical power—dashboard lights were non-functional, key fob not opening doors and I had to use the manual key to unlock the doors. I used my Goal Zero Venture Jump to jump start, which immediately brought the truck to life. I immediately turned the truck off and it restarted on its own without issue and showed no signs of weak cranking typically associated with low battery voltage.

The current battery is approaching 40 months of service, which appears to be near the expected lifespan for Mopar OE batteries. I’ve ruled out other potential causes: battery terminals are tight and corrosion-free, no interior lights or accessories were left on, and there are no aftermarket electrical modifications.

While I haven’t performed battery testing yet, is it possible for a failing battery to cause this type of sudden “dead battery” condition that requires jump starting, even when it can immediately restart afterward?

Update: The OE Mopar battery tested no errors but had low CCA and every test had very different results, so I replaced it with an Optima Yellow Top 94R H7 880A CCA. I immediately noticed the truck cranks over quicker and smoother which leads me to believe the old Mopar battery was/is failing and on its way out. I’ve read some opinions that the Optima battery isn’t worth the extra money but considering a new Mopar OE battery is $229 and the Optima was $341 - $18 for core return, in my opinion the extra money for the Optima is worth it.

I have not had a case of a "dead" car being able to restart after a jump without some additional driving to charge it, but these vehicles are electrically complicated. It may be that the battery was just over the edge to make this happen.

One big clue is the new battery cranks faster. This is something I have noticed many times after replacing a battery, we just do not notice the slowdown in cranking which happens over many months.

As long as the "dead" car symptom does not return relatively soon, I would not worry about it. As to the Optima, I have never run one. Not sure they are worth the extra cost. Also not sure they are not worth it.
