I have a 22 bighorn that I purchased from a relative. For some reason he ordered it with an open differential. the gear ratio is 3:21.
I want to add a Detroit (Eaton) Truetrac. A local mechanic I spoke to told me its a rabbit hole if I do this because there is no guaranty it wont affect the gear ratios between the rear and front end. That does not make sense to me. Are there any experts here that can clarify if this will be can of worms? Thank you all.

so a 4wd with a open diff?? just swapping the entire rear out would be the way i would go 4wd or not.
that mechanic is wacked and don't let him near your truck

3.21 is equal to 3.21. The local mechanic is nuts.

There is likely a reason I only see him at the cafe, and not in his shop.

If you have the time and tools and space put it in yourself. Pretty straightforward, not like replacing gears and having to set backlash and such.
