Well, I tried searching but the search box is completely inept. I love the site but the search feature here sucks.

Anyway:

I purchased a set of 6 oil & tire rotations from the dealer at a little less than $40 per, which is a pretty decent deal in my area. I've got a little ways before I get to my first oil change but I was just curiously checking out the manual to see what kind of oil was specified. I was surprised to see the recommendation of 20 weight for an engine this size. My Titan (5.6 V8) used 30 weight, and it seemed to me that was just about the right viscosity - I can't imagine having used 20 weight on it.

I know the manufacturers are all trying to thin the oil they use out a bit to save some fuel economy, but what do you all think of the long-term protection of 20 vs. 30 weight? To me, 5W-30 is a good compromise between water and gear oil. My Kia Soul, with a 1.6 4 banger, uses 20 weight and it manages to burn some of it off between oil changes.

Thoughts?

The new gen Hemis have used 5w 20 for years. I’ve had 5 of these trucks and always used what was recommended with no issues.

20 weight is pretty common for all modern pickups. GM uses 0W20 in the V8's, Ford uses 5W20 in all engines except the 3.5 ecoboost uses 5W30. Most manufactures explicitly say not to use heavier weight oil because of internal motor complications. If you don't want to hear the lifters every time during a cold start use 0W20 full synthetic.
