Hi everyone,
I’ve been reading a ton of horror stories about the oil cooler/heater going out on the 5.7’s recently, leading to a huge mess of oil contaminated coolant that needs to be removed from the cooling system. I’ve been thinking about either disconnecting the coolant lines from the cooler and connecting them together so the coolant bypasses the cooler, or doing the same along with removing the oil cooler from the engine block.
I have been messing around with clamping the coolant lines to the cooler to see if there is any big difference in oil temps. So far, the only difference I see is that it takes a little longer for the engine oil to warm up. Once it does, the oil temp seems to run 5-10 degrees lower than coolant temp. I have not towed anything with the lines clamped yet, so I am wondering how much this oil cooler/heater does to bring the oil temps down while under a heavy load. I live in a year round warm/hot environment, so I am not terribly concerned about the engine oil taking too long to warm up. I am however concerned about keeping the engine oil within operating specs and don’t want it to get too hot.
Has anyone removed or bypassed the engine oil cooler/heater on the 5.7, and what results did you have by doing so?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
