I Just bought my first truck. 2022 rebel fully loaded with 33k miles on it, extended warranty all that. I’m beyond stoked for it. Had everything I wanted as far as equipment and trim goes. The only thing I overlooked is the gear ratio.. as being new to truck ownership wasn’t aware of it honestly.

I predominantly will be driving highway with this truck about 25k miles per year easily. Rarely tow anything. 65-75 mph average, but with single lane highway passing as part of my commute, gonna need to open up the throttle at 65 to 80 in a short period to get back over. (It’s legal to go 15 over in my state for passing purposes)

Now I understand that the 3.22 is typically better suited for this role as it is geared for lower rpms at highway speeds. (Yes, I read the long post breaking the ratios down)

My question is.. real world am I gonna have regrets with this truck in my application? How much is it going to affect me1-2 mpg doesn’t concern me much. My concern is this going to have an adverse effect over the trucks service life Or am I just overthinking this whole thing??

Thanks everyone

never have i heard of 80 on a 2 lane road being legal under any circumstances? what state is that legal in?
call me old, legal or not i would not do it in a truck. i don't know is the EcoDiesel suited for that?
16 second 1/4 mile time.my guy, leave a little early slow down and enjoy the cruse.
i agree with the 8 speed, 3.92's not really a big deal. but it was when we had 3+4 speed auto's

I have 2020 3L ecodiesel with 3.92. So far about 66,000 miles, 70% highway. No issues and mileage is still 25+ mpg hwy @ 75 - 80mph (better if I slow down to 70). I got 3.92 since I was towing race car in enclosed trailer, but now not so much towing. No regrets.

If it makes you feel any better..I filled up Wifey-pooh's 2024 Durango SRT392 AlcHEMI yesterday..and it cost me $91.00..and this has been weekly lately. (15mpg TOPS and 93 Premium at $3.97/gal)

BUT, the "smiles per gallon" is off the charts!! (though the sound of it has tarnished my love of my 2024 Laramie G/T, which I thought had a pretty decent OEM exhaust)

that's not fair. trx to hellrango would be closer smile wise.

Not sure about diesel, but I had two identical 5.7's, but one with 3.2's and one with 3.9's, and cruising at 50-75 speeds, the 3.9's got 1 mpg better over about 26K miles average. My only theory is the 3.9's rarely had to downshift to 7th and the 3.2's did it all the time.

If you need more testimony supporting a tow toy to justify 3.92's ...

Secretly when I'm burned out, sometimes I spend 8 hrs in the sun not catching fish JUST so I can TOW.

Towing keeps you young. 🤪

Congrats on your 'new' RAM.

You'll be just fine. You're gonna appreciate the calm nature of that drivetrain when cruising (3.0L and 3.92). The stock trans tuning isn't perfect but the truck really does like to stay in 8th gear even when pulling some hills. I imagine you'll still see 23-25 mpg easy. So long as you're not hammering the throttle every chance you get. My truck is similar in that we both have the same ratio, engine, ride height, and all terrain tires (though I think the Rebels come with 33's and I'm running 35's). The only "major" aerodynamic difference is the profile of the front bumper, the big horn has the little retractable chin splitter that gives you maybe a 0.5-1 MPG increase while on the highway, the Rebel doesn't have this. That being said I still manage 24 mixed driving pretty easily, and I've taken some road trips fully loaded and managed 26-27 while cruising at 70-80 mph.

TLDR: Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good information here that has helped me plenty and I'm sure will help you. Drive the truck, and let us know if you change your mind about your purchase. Congratulations on the new truck! Post some photos!

Just did Toronto, Canada to Daytona Beach in my 20 ED Reb. I averaged 30 MPG both ways over 5100 kms total trip. Now I wasn’t giving’ her the whole way but 75 MPH on cruise. Going though WVA hills really affected the mpgs but overall She was great. Zero complaints here.
