Hi got a new 21 ram last summer. I added coolant 2 times in 7,500 miles figured was low from factory . Other day my check engine light came on. Took to Dealer, said I have a blow head gasket and cylinder head has a Crack.
I Changed oil at 3,000 miles. Took a oil sample. Sent it in never looked at the results . After I heard back from dealer went thru emails found oil sample, yup coolant in oil on the test. Have red mark "don't run"
Dealer is doing what mfg told them to do, replace head gasket and head.
It's had coolant in the oil probably since I bought it.
I dont see how the engine can run its full life knowing this.
I believe it should get a new engine and warranty.
How do I proceed to get what I want?

Supposed to talk to ram customer care Monday

Ouch! Coolant in the oil is bad for bearings. Definitely express your concerns. Sounds like it might have been bad right out of the gate, and it's not clear which came first, the gasket or the crack. And how bad did it overheat? I'd at least want the block checked for warp, but might push for a fresh long block. I can see where they might want to save work and expense of unmating the engine and transmission, but how do they prove or disprove the extent of damage? Hope it works out for you.

Anyway it goes its still a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty. It's odd that there are no other symptoms other than coolant loss.

your engine will be fine. I have replaced tons of head gaskets over the yrs., some for simple leaks into the combustion chamber and others due to head bolt issues. Some with no coolant in the oil and several with coolant in the oil. All had new head gaskets installed (some with heads if warpage found on the head) and the ones with oil in the coolant, several oil changes to flush out the coolant and non of them have never returned with issues. The dealer is not going to install a new engine just because you want one. They are going to fix it what it needs and you are still going to have your powertrain warranty. You are over reacting to a situation that happens all the time in the automotive world. I work for a manufacture that has performance engines with known head bolt issues and have never had to install an engine due to coolant and oil mixing. If you are that worried, purchase an extended warranty that will cover powertrain for XXX amount of time.

highly doubt is has a crack, probably what the service adviser told him. Most advisers are clueless when it comes to most vehicle issues. In 16 yrs, I have never seen a crack in a cylinder head. Its usually head bolt issues causing coolant loss or a defect in the gasket. Modern blocks are usually pretty solid and if any warpage is found, its usually on the cylinder head. Just a simple gasket issue that is easily fixed.

whoa...are you talking only 5.7's?, cause there was a WHOLE lot of Pentastar 6's a few years ago that had cracked heads...casting issue in the Mexico plant. I had one replaced, the dealer was doing so many of them that they were stocking heads. It was a ONE day turnaround for the head in mine to be replaced.https://www.autoevolution.com/news/pentastar-v6-still-prone-to-cylinder-head-failure-82615.html

Not saying that’s isn’t the problem. I didn’t really know that was an issue with ram engines I just have never seen it in my time as a tech.

I'm guessing the oil didn't look like chocolate milk coming out you or whomever changed the oil would have seen that right off. Thinking sample probably had "trace" amounts

It's unclear from the OP if this diagnosis was based on disassembly or just a guess, but if it's already leaked once, I'd want to verify surfaces before bolting it back.

Never worked on the 5.9/5.2l Magnum engines then. They had cracks between the valves. Was more unusual for them to not have cracked. Most didn't cause any issues, but some were bad enough to actually cause problems

no problem, FCA had to replace 7500 left heads on the Pentastar a few years back. I have not heard of Hemi's having any issue like that though.

Yes I changed the oil when I took the sample and it looked OK. You're probably right about Me overreacting. Thanks fellers
