Hi all first truck is here : Hemi etorque, Granite night edition with ram boxes, tech package, air suspension, advanced safety Still no plates yet, but did take her around the block. First ride observation 22” wheels with new Michelin defenders. felt unexpectedly “harsh” especially with air suspension. display indicated 44 psi and it was real cold.I’ll reduce in hopes that was the reason. Anyone run these and thoughts /psi settings?

MFT- tonneau- trifold factory I believe. Meaningful gaps on each side of tailgate when shut. I was surprised there isn’t a factory seal. Hoping to get “watertight”, yet imagine that might be a unicorn? Any suggestions
Any other top tips for a 1500 newbie would be appreciated.

Thanks.

hello and congrats, for the tire, look in the driver door sticker for recommanded psi, but it does sound high and that would help with what you felt... by memory its recommanded 36psi but not sure, check you door sticker ;) since they are 22in, you dont have much sidewall, so the more psi you put in them the harder it will ride

Amazon search tailgate seal and go to town. Tailgates as well as the bed aren’t really meant to be watertight. Same for the tonneau cover unless your going fiberglass topper or one piece. You can however get it pretty water resistant nut heavy rain and pressure from car washes will sometime still get in.

Get rid of the soft tri-fold….I sold mine almost immediately for $300 and bought this. Best switch ever.

Watertight...not going to happen unless you get one of the fiberglass lids that cover the entire bed.

My buddy had one. It did the job, and very well, but it was a pita when he wanted to carry large items. It only lifted up about 2' (rough guess). So, if he wanted to put something (a grill?) into his truck, the entire lid had to be removed. (Easy, but a two-person job.)

Put a BedRug mat on the bed. It pulls right out (velcro strips) if you want to dump mulch in. Otherwise, it keeps things from sliding around and keeps items ABOVE any water that seeps in.

Yes it's 36psi. I like to run mine 36 up front and 34 in the rear. My bed is usually empty. I'll add air when needed.

You're not likely to get it watertight. Reset your expectations and load your bed accordingly.

The factory soft trifold is a POS. Seriously. My current truck came with one and after having good covers in the past, that POS pissed me off immediately and every day. I couldn't get it off my truck fast enough.

With RamBoxes, MFT, and that cover, you do NOT need brackets (which you may read about elsewhere on here). The brackets people talk about are for trucks with MFT and NO RamBoxes.

But, that cover you have means it came with different bed rails than all the trucks that did not come with the factory tri-fold. Yet another reason to hate the factory tri-fold.

Anyway, so to put just about any good cover on, you will also have to get the "other" factory bed rails. Look for a Mopar DTRAILKIT. That is the rails you will need. Once you remove the factory tri-fold and replace those bed rails (which is a very easy job), then you can put pretty much any bed cover on that you want - as long as it is for a 5th gen (DT) RAM with RamBoxes. The MFT doesn't matter, for trucks with RamBoxes. Same covers fit with or without MFT (WHEN you have RamBoxes).

As for a specific cover, I have, in the past, had:

Retrax
BakFlip - what is now called the MX4
Bak Revolver X4
And, of course, briefly, the factory soft tri-fold

When I got my current truck, I put the Bak Revolver X4S on.

I like it the best of any cover I've had. It doesn't take up any room inside the bed (like a Retrax).

It doesn't block the rear window when the bed is open (like a BakFlip). It also looks better than a BakFlip (to me).

The bed is secured anytime the tailgate is closed and locked. No extra key required (like the Retrax).

Bak Industries customer service is seriously top notch. I had an issue with the Revolver X4 (which is now addressed in the X4S design). Even though I was just out of warranty, when I sent pics to Bak, they offered to send me a brand new cover at no charge, to replace the one that was having an issue. And the issue was basically just cosmetic. I was amazed. I am now a Bak customer for life (or until they change and screw me over LOL).

for the gaps your talking about, no cover will fix that, so dont change it for nothing, as even a 2k$ cover will still have those 2 gaps
we all have those gaps, like PurpleRT said buy a seal for those 2 gaps and youll be good

there is a few threads on this if you want to research what others have use

Definitely do your own research on tonneau covers so you get what you want. My Diamondback cover has (so far) proven to be water-tight through a few rains (heavy and light) and car washes. It works with MFT and ramboxes with no modification. I've had no issues with water intrusion through the tailgate, just dust but then I live in the desert.

I picked up some thick rubber self-stick weatherstripping from Ace Hardware to fill those gaps. I'll see if I can find a pic.

Great replies, thx - yes 36 psi on sticker confirmed by *FliPmaRC, I should have added that info. On Tonneau- I have watched MX4 Backflip videos where some put the weatherstripping as suggested above (mikeru82 thx for pics! I assume it came with adhesive backing)
With the few times I would have it flipped up, the digital mirror will cover that, yet will be looking into Bak Revolver X4S and Diamondback as well Given the $ shelled out already; I think I will get some mileage out of the factory for the time being. I like the bedrug idea, as I am thinking mostly about packing up the "family truckster" for vacation and of course it will certainly be the wife's or kids' bags that get wet!

Water resistant bags or grab a tote or two from home depot I throw most of my gear in the bed and besides the little bit of water thats gets in by the tailgate it’s fine I just make sure not to put anything that I’m concerned with getting wet near the back.

I got a 4x6 commercial door mat from Home Depot from my current truck and for my last truck. They were about $40. Perfect width for a bed with RamBoxes. Very easy to cut it to length, then turn it around so the cut edge is up front where it will never be seen.

It has channels in it, so anything in the bed is help up off the floor a little and even off the mat itself a little. So, water that gets in around the sides of the cover and tailgate has a place to run without getting to the bottoms of any "stuff" that is back there.

Don't get a Retrax.
Mine leaks like hell, it even drips to the top middle of the cover, so I not only get water down the sides, I get water in the middle.

When I had an MX4 it was watertight, it will take a little extra work with the Ramboxes to make it watertight though.
Black silicone is your friend.

The factory soft tri-fold was legit as hell. Only reason I got rid of it was I know it would get damaged from snow, and I carry goods that dwarf the price of my 2022 Limited and I can't trust someone to not just cut the cover take take a peak.
I though retractable would be cool, and it is, but a hard trifold is better in every single way.

Brilliant! Thanks for this. I just thought of locking my bed divider a slot or two from tailgate and keeping all items above that as well might make sense.
