The Laramie trims and above, are equipped with automatic 4wd. There's a clutch inside the T/C which is switched in and out by the electronics, so there's no 4wd until the controls detect wheelspin. The 4th gen Rams had someone fabricate a bypass circuit to be able to energize the T/C clutch manually. This circuit eliminates fault codes resulting from the 4wd controller detecting clutch engagement when it is not commanded to engage. Last time I looked, no bypass circuit for the 5th gen DT yet.
My laramie has a 4wd auto position or button, can't remember which, and a 4wd position. If auto lets the computer control that clutch, what does 4wd do?
4wd only when the controls engage the T/C clutch electrically when it determines that there's slippage..AND wheelspin at the rear axle which engages the T/C clutch mechanically. These two elements have to be in place for 4wd to be engaged.
Some folks have removed the auto T/C and installed the T/C out of a Rebel, it can be done, then one would have 4 lock.
