2020 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 MPG

These may be a series of stupid questions but I figured I would ask.

I have a 2020 ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 with a 3.5 ready lift kit with 295/55/22s. I also have an S&B Cold Air Intake. My truck runs great but my MPGs seem to stay low. I’m at 12.8 currently and I’m mostly highway with some city driving. I have about 40k on the truck and using regular unleaded, nothing supreme or special.

I have heard Sea Foam can help every 3k or so, does or has anyone used that before?

Taking into the modifications on your truck, 12.8 might be where you stay. :-(

There's a Sea Foam discussion on this forum somewhere, you might do a search for it. Very entertaining . I am not against using Sea Foam, but IMO if you get to a point that you need to use it every 3k miles you likely have bigger issues. Normally I would think your highway mpg should be higher, but building on what @GregHBNA said, a lifted truck on the highway isn't very aerodynamic, and these Rams aren't great fuel savers to begin with. Nice looking truck though!

It all depends how you drive it, i have 50K on mine, i average 19 to 20 mpg and i have a throttle controller that makes the gas pedal very touchy, 22's and over 200lbs worth of sound system in the back seat, but if i drive a little more aggressively the MDS never come on and gas mileage drops real quick, idle time is a mileage killer as well

I just traded in my '19 Laramie 4WD. With the original stock (22") tires, over 23K miles, I was averaging 14.8 MPG (as calculated by Fuelly).

I changed to 20" wheels with 275/60 tires (so, 33" versus the stock 32") and averaged 13.8 MPG from 23K to 72K, when I traded it in.

With the lift and the bigger tires you have, 12.8 sounds like just what you're going to get.

I have a 2019 laramie 1500 5.7L 3.21 with a leveling kit, running 325/50 r22 (35’s). No mods just a few extras like Tonneau cover, borla s-type catback. I drive a lot of highway and I actually AVERAGE between 18-19.2(not resetting on the highway,I never reset the mpg). I’ve done that and kept it in low 20’s on flatter roads. My variation depends if it’s my turn that week to pick the boys up. Anywho, I’d get that thing looked into a bit bc your losing A LOT of mpg’s somewhere. Driveline angle maybe? Idk

I have a 21 Laramie with the 22's, 3.21 rear, Magnaflow muffler, and AEM drop in filter and I average 20.5-21 mostly highway. I ran a tank of non ethanol 87 last week and got 23.8 average at 72 MPH.

Good questions. Yes that is normally the dash readings but I have calculated myself multiple times and found the dash to be very accurate.
And yes , I used the rough country calibration tool and I must say, it’s a must. Prior to calibration, shifts were crazy horrible and mpg was running in 13-15 range fir me. Running 65-70 mph it would constantly bounce from 7 to 8th gear. The pic is today on my home from work and was reset last Sunday.

I paid $4.40/gal, regular 87 was $4.09 at the time.

These trucks are very sensitive to how you drive and your gearing.

Driving 74 mph on the highway gives me around 16-17 mpg.

If I can keep it around 67 mph I get a staggering 19-20 mpg

As soon as I give it gas to pass someone and fly by i'm back to 15 for a long while.

If I had 3.21 gears I would get better mph at 74 mph.

It seems the sweet spot for my truck is in the high 50s and low 60s for mpg.
I also get better mpg NOT using 87 (ram doesn't even recommend you use 87).

I also noticed a huge 3-5 MPG difference (in the good direction) after my first 5k miles on the truck.

I don't understand what you mean. You are going 65 mph and you gun it to 70? going uphill? Yes you are going to change gears when you give it more gas or need more power withing a particular mph range.

No, Not gunning it or going uphill. That comment was pertaining to tire size correction. Anything over 60 mph with cruise set on flat ground before correcting really messed with shift points and mpg

My 2020 Ram Laramie with 3.92 gear and a 4" BDS lift running on 35x12.5 x 20 BFG K02 I average 14.5 around town mostly short trips around town. On the highway if I'm lucky with a good tail wind I might get 15.8 mpg but here in Atlanta on the interstate it's pretty hard to run below 75-80 mph without getting ran over . The last time I looked I had around 8-9000 miles on the truck, it's not my daily drive. Also when I added my Truxedo CT cover there was no real change to my mpg.
