2019 Rear Gear Ratio swap

Yeah I think on my test drive with the 3.21 I averaged about 12 mpg. But I opened it up a few times too. My Silverado has 3.42 and I can get 22 mpg with the 5.3 v8. So the mpg is giving me a moment of pause before switching. I will say I didn't want to get back in my 16 Silverado after driving a loaded Ram.

I have to say even without my 35's on ( which will be put on Monday) I just love the 3.92 vs. the 3.21. Much better to drive around town.

I have been tracking my fuel on fuelly which you can see in my signature. I have the 3.21 and wish I had the 3.92. I spend 80% of my time driving freeway speeds around 75-80 MPH. I am on track to put over 30K miles on the truck in the first year of the trucks life. My old company work truck was a chevy 1500 with the 5.3 and I was averaging 13-14 mpg under the same operating conditions. All in all I am pleased with the truck. Highly recommend it over a chevy. (as a note, if you look at the fuelly and see the 8 MPG fillups, I was towing a 6000# trailer from Wyoming to the Washington peninsula @65-70 MPH, I got a lot better economy coming home going from sea level to 7000 ft).

My 2015 Ram had 3.92 gears and the current 2019 Ram 1500 has the 3.21 gears. Around town they both had similar mileage while running down the highway over 65 the 3.21 will get 3-5 MPG better. 65 MPH or less I do not see much difference. Fun factor goes to 3.92..

My truck is silent on the road with 3.92's, and I actually get 1mpg better in town than my buddy does with 3.21's. The fuel economy difference isn't enough for me to ever choose 3.21's, besides, the drivability of the 3.92's just makes the truck that much more of a pleasure to drive.

It's fantastic actually. Thanks to the 8 speed, the lowly Ram 3.21 has a final drive ratio equal or better than a 2019 Toyota Tundra with the 4.30 rear end. I recently towed a 29 ft travel trailer with no complaints. [1100 lbs tongue weight, 7-8k wet weight].

When not towing, I spend a lot of time cruising on the highway with lighter loads. I can consistently get 24 MPG averages on highway trips. This is the best highway fuel economy I've ever seen in a gas half ton truck.

Couldn't be happier with this setup actually. Towing capability when I need it and smooth efficient HWY cruising when I don't.

Hi there. I am a Silverado owner looking at buying a new ram2019. I found just the one I want in a Laramie trim as a dealer demo. The only thing is it has the 3.92 elock rear axle. I drive mostly highway and my trailer is only 3500 lbs. MPG is a bigger priority for me.

Can you easily swap to 3.21 gears or am I better off just trying to find another truck?

First question. Can you easily swap rear differential gears? Here's what's involved: you would either have to pull the differential gear set out and replace the ring and pinion with the 3:21 gear set. Parts & labor <> $1500. Or, find a rear carrier assembly (differential, axle shafts, housing, etc.) and swap it into the new truck. I have no idea what a used complete fully populated carrier assembly would go for.

As far as fuel consumption, I've had three Ram 1500s in a row, all Quad Cabs in two-wheel drive. I can give you my results after owning two 4th gen Ram 1500 with the 3.92 rear differential for four full years. My 2010 Hemi with a five speed transmission had a lifetime average of 17.67 MPG. My 2014 Hemi with the 8-speed transmission had a lifetime average of 18.64 MPG.

My current 2019 Hemi with the 3.21 rear differential has a current lifetime average of 20.21 MPG.
