Ram’s new Tradesman and commercial electronics
by David Zatz on March 7, 2018 at 12:00 am EST
Ram is grabbing headlines today at the national Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, with the first public showing of the Tradesman model and new commercial telematics systems.

Inside the Tradesman

The Tradesman was first launched in 2011, aimed directly at contractors and other commercial owners. The regular cab’s final year is 2018; the 2019 is available as a long-bed Quad Cab, or as a short or long bed Crew Cab. The base engine is a V6 with a mild-hybrid system for responsiveness and fuel savings, with an optional Hemi V8 — with or without hybrid setup. All have eight speed transmissions, and either rear or four wheel drive.

The Tradesman can be equipped for towing up to 12,750 pounds, with up to 2,300 pounds of payload (Quad Cab). All the 2019 Ram 1500s have the largest front brakes in their segment (14.9 inches) for both stopping power and durability.
Even Tradesman buyers can get Ram’s four-corner air suspension; and the multi-link rear coil suspension is standard. The radio has a five-inch screen with a backup camera, hands-free phone system, three USB ports, and vinyl or cloth split bench seats in a six-passenger configuration. The interior color is black or light gray, with vinyl or carpeted floors.
The Tradesman comes with a 160-amp alternator and 730 amp battery, frequency-response damping shock absorbers, tilt/telescope steering column, locking tailgate, power locks and windows, and steel bumpers; the axle ratio is 3.21:1, which, with the eight-speed, should be ideal for most buyers. The powertrain warranty is good for five years or 60,000 miles.

Options include an 3.92 axle ratio, anti-slip rear differential, locking rear differential, off-road package, 180 amp alternator, folding towing mirrors, spray-in bed-liner, trailer brake controller, and various Mopar accessories.
The list price, announced yesterday, is $33,340 including destination — $50 more in Hawaii.

New telematics for commercial use

Ram Telematics, designed for commercial buyers and powered by Verizon, provides fleet managers with vehicle and driver data, with the intent of increasing vehicle use, cutting the miles driven and fuel burned, and reducing idle time and irresponsible driving. The system, optional on all Ram trucks and vans, starts at $800 per year and is covered by the 3/36 warranty.
The system is factory installed, ready for activation on delivery; fleet owners will be able to retrofit the 4G module to 2015-2018 vehicles later this year.
