when i have a usb flash drive (using the recommended fat32 file format) and the files get organized and starts playing a song and 90% of the time if i turn the truck off it starts over to the same song the other 10% of the time it starts back where it was when i shut off the truck there is no method to the madness. sometimes it will be 5 min. and it will pick up where it left off sometimes over-night, but most of the time it is back to square 1

I stopped using flash drives for that reason, and now just connect to my YouTube Music playlists on my phone. Way more flexible in terms of music, playlist, feels like another dimension in listening to your songs in your vehicle through Android Auto or Apple Carplay.
