I'm not aware of any KV test done at 82F, ASTM D445 tests show the KV at 40C, which is 104F, and at 100C which of course is 212F. Yes, I believe some companies use ASTM D97 for pour point, but ASTM 2602 was replaced by ASTM D5293 for the CCS testing and ASTM D4684 is for MRV.

Your response gave me a reason to refresh my understanding of motor oils and look at my now dated data. I've printed out new specification sheets for a number of oils, and I would've done more had I not been busy yesterday.

You are correct that Pour Point value is no longer indicative of low temperature viability as the Pennzoil spec. sheets indicate for their Platinum and Ultra Platinum. This may surprise some, as it did me, that Pennzoil Ultra Premium 5W-20 actually has better low temperature CCS and MRV viscosities than the 0W-20 version. Of course, there has to be a tradeoff to do that and it shows up in the Viscosity Index number. And 5W-20 is G6 and 0W-20 is a G5 ILSAC.

So now my Excel files are probably worthless, except for history!

Thank you for the discussion.

Best regards,
Dusty

I'm not sure why the Pennzoil PDS doesn't show the 0W-20 meeting SP/GF-6A, either it doesn't meet the spec or they just failed to update the info on the website. Ultra is just a weirdly marketed oil, I'm happy with Platinum in my Ram and Jeep, meets all the specs needed, it's easy to find and the GTL base stock gives me the warm and fuzzies. Maybe donate those old Excel files to the Smithsonian!

I meant to mention earlier that the CCS and MRV viscosities are based on different test temperatures. 0W is tested at -35C for the CCS and -40C for the MRV and -30C and -35C respectively for 5W so, while the 0W is higher it's also tested at colder temperatures.

Yes, I noticed that.

FWIW, what is your opinion of the new (to North America) 0W-16 oils? I haven't found a spec. sheet on one yet.

Dusty

I think 0W-16 is a remarkable bit of engineering. When you consider the skill and knowledge it took to develop the right blend of base stock(s) and additives to produce an oil of such low viscosity that works as well as it does, in its intended vehicles, is impressive as hell. I also feel the same way about the 0W and 5W-20 oils available now. What do you think of 0W-16?
