I imagine that there has to be a certain level of liquid to keep the pump from running dry when you accelerate or decelerate, or travel on hills. My first car I would drive until it sputtered going up hill from lack of fuel.

Don't run it dry. You will not get it to restart without priming the fuel system and purging the air.
