    High Temp Towing Uphill

Scram1500: I have not removed radiator cap to look inside. What am I looking for? Inside a cold radiator? Air? What?

    High Temp Towing Uphill

I was climbing at 30 - 45. The SAE test says all trucks need to be able to pull their listed FULL towing GCWR at min 40 mph up 11.5 mile grade without getting a coolant warning. This test criteria only makes sense and I'm glad I found out this standard was developed and was adopted. Consumers...

    High Temp Towing Uphill

I would think that if a truck was to successfully climb an 11.4 mile 5% grade on a 100 degree day, with AC on full, without hitting 250 and triggering the coolant warning light, the temp would need to level off (stop rising) somewhere below 250. 240 - 245 would make sense to me. In my case...

    High Temp Towing Uphill

I just read a summary of SAE J2807. The towing capacities listed by truck manufacturers must be established using this standard starting several years ago. The grade test component is called Highway Gradeability and requires the truck to pass the following test criteria: Climb the 11.4 mile...

OK I'll try higher octane next time. I must say I was not up to 4000 rpm..I was around 3000 - 3500. Can you explain how running at 4000 will help mitigate engine heat accumulation?

    High Temp Towing Uphill

Nothing blocking radiator. Cruise control was off. I locked into 4th gear for most of the climb .... 3rd gear for the last steepest portion. Coolant fluid 1/3 above min level...assume that is OK. Using your usual unleaded fuel...should I consider higher grade?. If light goes on at 250, but...

Also to mention that my truck build sheet shows the truck came with: Heavy duty engine cooling Heavy duty transmission oil cooler Engine oil heat exchanger

    High Temp Towing Uphill

Is it remotely possible that I have a coolant temp sensor recording too high at the high end? I assume that the gauge position is based on the sensor reading?

    High Temp Towing Uphill

This is a brand new truck with a spotless radiator. I again forgot to notice the oil temp. I saw the FTL video and they were screaming up a grade similar, or worse, then the one I climbed. They were pulling 10,000 lbs, whereas I'm pulling 6800. I should not be hitting 248!

    High Temp Towing Uphill

You make good points. I'm just searching for answers .... I have read a lot of threads on different blogs regarding peoples experiences towing with this truck and experiencing what they perceive as high coolant temps. I seem to be the only one to experience temps over 245. Many, many people...

    High Temp Towing Uphill

So I made my return trip up the other side of the same grade (6 mi @ 6%), the difference being ambient temp was 65 degrees (25 degrees cooler!) vs 90 degrees. I expected the coolant temp to be less at 65 degrees vs 90 degrees. It was not. Coolant hit 248 at crest. Same grade, same load...

    High Temp Towing Uphill

Ambient temp was 91. 6% grade for 6 miles. Towing 300# under GVWR. 3.21 gears. What are OP's? My coolant maxed at 247...no warning light. That comes on at 250. I didn't notice oil and Trans temps...I was glide to coolant temp only

2 fans better 1 electric especially when towing?

    High Temp Towing Uphill

I could definitely could see an electric shrouded fan if I leaned down into the engine compartment and looked into the shroud toward the radiator..only way to see it. And then there is the mechanical fan up against the engine. Wouldn't 2 fans as I have be better than 1?. Is that what makes...

Scram1500: When you say 5th gen all electric fans, do you mean both fans? No mechanical/pulley fan? Any idea how the elec fan in my fan shroud works? How to confirm it's coming on?

I take it back...my truck was the last of the 4th generation! Devildodge was correct

    High Temp Towing Uphill

My 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock is 5th generation. Looking under the hood yesterday, there are 2 cooling fans. One is right in front of the engine and is serpentine belt driven powered off of water pump? Not sure. This fan starts and stops with engine on or off. So it seems that this fan...

    High Temp Towing Uphill

Most reassuring. Thanks. One last thought, I will be driving that pass at 40 degree cooler air temp (50 deg vs 90 deg). Any way to know how much cooler engine will be running at?

    High Temp Towing Uphill

I should revise that question. Technically my truck did not overheat as the coolant light did not come on. I learned from a Ram service center that the Ram 1500 coolant warning light comes on at 250 degrees. I had not reached that number, although I was close. So it seem that if one wanted...

    High Temp Towing Uphill

Great explanation. So the only real way to prevent an overheat while towing is using a truck with a larger engine?
