You need the red cable for any 2019-2024 Ram 1500 DT. (2025 is a different beast electronically). You should be able to keep it connected full time, but remove it (and re-connect the stock cables) before bringing it to a dealer for service.

"Idiot lights" have always meant to me the upshift indicator on a manual transmission vehicle. But anyway, @PurpleRT is right; the manfunction indicator light ("check engine light") should clear itself after you put a few miles on it.
