It is a shame that an old-design 5.7L is an almost $3k add.... That said, if I had to replace my Ram it would be on my list

I had the 5.2 in my '97. That truck would do a great burnout, but that was about it as far as the fun-o-meter on the street was concerned. Don;t forget the Rams from that era weighed less than similar trucks from the DT generation... There is a lot more crap - accessories, electronics, etc- on...

I have the 5" Carven tips on my GT. As long as the inlet is bell-mouthed it should fit.

Yeah, the 5.7 has always been an underachiever in the Ram. It's fine in a 1500 lb lighter car, but... An SRT bloodline 6.4 in these trucks is really what is needed. Even then it wouldn't feel like a racercar, but at least it wouldn't feel deficient.

Hum or whir on light acceleration in a specific speed range sounds like the rear end to me. I would start by changing the rear diff fluid, check for any glitter or debris in the fluid and refill with correct viscosity (and modifier if LSD). If you see anything in the fluid, drive it for a short...
