So if the cable(s) are not supporting the weight, what is? I assume the tailgate hinges/pivots but also assume that would not be a good thing long term.
There are countless opinions on what people like the best. You just need to decide what's most important to you, then find one that meets that criteria. Things to consider just off the top of my head:
Cost? You can spend $200 to $1500 for off-the-shelf ones, and more for color matched ones...

Exactly. I tip my hat to those folks who do that stuff (as long as they don't mess up something else in the process). It's very interesting, but I'm just a spectator on most of it now.
Does yours have the rain-sensing wipers? If it does, I've heard that Rain-x can interfere with their performance, but that's anecdotal. Let me know as I'm curious about doing it myself.

It does look good. The only thing I wouldn't like is having to remove all of that if/when I need to haul something larger. But if that's not an issue for you, then good job! :)
