It’s not the weight for payload, but for CAFE standards. Manufacturers are using aluminum panels to lighten their vehicles and improve mpg. A smaller tank will save quite a bit more than an aluminum hood, and is cheaper to produce.

Depends on your usage. When I tow through the desert, it isn’t uncommon to have a headwind that kills mileage. The extra capacities will let me bypass all those super expensive gas stations in the tiny towns along the way.

When truck shopping, I wrote off Chevy because they don’t offer an extended range tank. In all of the new Rams here in Vegas, I could only find 2 that had extended range.
