If you set them just right you can have them set as blind spot in regular and correctly for towing with no adjustment required between the two. Takes a while and a competent helper, but it’s possible.

Other possibility is that your engine was pinging like a pixie on 87 octane gas. Perhaps try running 89 for the higher elevations and towing. This can cause some overheat issues if happening often.
