There is no reason whatsoever to worry. If other parts were going to rust, they'd rust regardless of what this part is doing. If it really concerns you, when you get the proper galvanized parts, disassemble it when you get home and spray some rust neutralizer around there.

Surely that isn't standard behavior. I mean sometimes shadows get cast onto the sensor and headlights might turn on "early" but... the next logic level should be to leave dash/radio brightness at daytime levels. Then after a deeper darkness is sensed, the dash/radio should dim to nighttime...
