No... Uconnect subscription is not required. I also have a 2018 Durango. All my 1 yr trial subscriptions ran out last October; I didn't renew anything and everything about the key fob works as usual.
Not a huge deal since the traction control is pretty good. I'm thinking about ordering an open differential (deliberately). Having a 3rd differential option is a good thing, not a bad thing: open, LSD, or locker. Each of these behave differently. Not worse or better, different, with each suiting...
Fob frequrncies are fixed: RF transmits at 433MHz, LF at 125kHz. The device is not mimicking a frequency, it's mimicking a "data packet". If the hacking device precisely repeats this packet, the truck will believe the key fob is near and it will do anything as when the fob is actually present...
You might have to take the reigns and be pro-active in the contact. I visited two dealers and same thing; both seemed much less active compared to sales people on other FCA vehicles I bought. Ram 1500 sales for the past few months have been at or near all-time highs... so maybe they have a lot...

Rolling codes are in the RF transmission; no worries there regarding these type of hacks.... hence my "baloney" comment. Although not mentioned in the OP, but everybody caught except me, that article is talking about capturing the LF signal and mimicking key fob proximity. I'm not sure if any...
Is Eco mode not obvious by looking at the fuel economy gauge?
I don't have a Ram but in my Hemi Durango the instantaneous fuel economy reading jumps by a significant amount when MDS activates.
Awesome post; I've been jones'ing for some new Pentastar feedback. I'd like to see the 4th gen and 5th gen torque charts to see how the new engine was tweaked.
