How big a camper? How far do you expect to haul it? IMO the 33 gallon tank is a must for towing, but if you'll only be pulling a pop-up or travelling an hour or two away the smaller tank should be bearable. If you plan on pulling a travel trailer cross-country it definitely wouldn't be. You can...
Naw, nothing so severe. My TT is on the larger end of what you can pull with a half-ton; lateral forces at the hitch create enough of a yaw moment on the truck that you have to counter steer and unless you get provide just the right amount of input it can feel a little like you're slithering...
I had an Andersen. I don't see how a lighter trailer would create problems with weight distribution, but its sway control is dependent on tongue weight: more weight = more friction = more sway control. The problem with the Andersen IMO is that travel trailers have massive surface area for their...
A couple of other types:
Andersen hitches use a friction sleeve on a rotating ball shaft. It think it would work well on a flatbed or moderately sized enclosed trailer but I didn't like it on my TT — too much surface area.
Projection hitches (Hensley Arrow or ProPride 3P) are the gold standard...
You were towing during that? That must have been utterly terrifying! I was at home and thought the negative pressure on the leeward side of the house was going to rip the windows out.
The ProPride is heavy, but the payload hit isn't as bad as it might seem at first. The hitch head effectively lengthens the trailer tongue; the longer arm reduces the hitch weight on the tow vehicle a bit. Put another way, the TT bears some of the weight of the hitch. Ultimately, CAT scale...
At that size/weight I'd recommend it. It's not just about safety (though that's obviously top priority) — towing is a lot more comfortable as well.
If you're trying to decide between the two, they're identical while towing. The ProPride 3P uses an updated version of the design on the Hensley...
ProPride for the win! The hitch allows the TV and TT to be at nearly 90° to each other without disengaging weight distribution. Not that that's an argument against bags, of course. Plenty of folks use both.
The EVIC theme resetting to default has been a problem for trucks with the 8.4 NAV system since day one. (8.4 non-NAV don't get themes, and this particular issue doesn't seem to be a problem on the 12" units — they have different problems...)
@b.berg What's your software version?
The goal of weight distribution is NOT to load the steering and drive axles equally. The goal is to reload your front axle to where it would be without the trailer attached. The standard advice is to do three passes on the CAT scales:
Truck only (with full fuel, occupants, and loaded as you...
The Andersen hitch uses chains, not bars. Sway control comes from a friction sleeve around a tapered ball shaft. Friction (and thus sway control) increases along with tongue weight.
Tightening the chains returns more weight to the front axle. That's definitely helpful for control if you were...
You question wasn't addressed to me, but I've been using the Andersen WDH so I'll chime in. I pull a 32' travel trailer that weighs about 7500 lbs loaded.
I like the hitch a lot as far as weight, noise, mess, and ease of hookup are concerned. I'm not impressed with its sway control performance...
Is 7k the dry weight or loaded weight? If it's dry weight you're pushing the limits of your payload and might be over depending on what you plan to put in the truck. Your little ones may not weigh much now but that will change quickly! If 7k is the wet weight you should be fine. The 3.92 gears...
This response is — frankly — insulting. This has been a known software issue since day one. We need the update that has been promised "next quarter" for at least the last year and a half. I started to feel a sliver of hope when other owners started reporting getting UConnect updates but those...
Sure, but we can't account for those things if you don't tell us about them. Your post didn't say what you were hauling and towing, just the hitch weight. For your configuration I'd expect payload to similar to mine (~1500 lbs) so you should be able to haul the family and tow your rig, just...
FYI: That recall number calls out the 2500 and 3500; bed step part numbers 82215842AC/AD.
It does not call out the 1500; bed step part number 82215289Ax.
