I might have an answer later today. I had sent a message to RAM customer care the other day and they called me this morning. I asked them about the brackets and if they were structural or not. They had NO idea what I was talking about. I gave them the part number (it's on the bottom) and...

Notice though that if you have the RAM boxes, you don't have those brackets in the front of the bed. My guess is that they're still there, but they're concealed by the RAM boxes. That would certainly make it easier to install a bed cover!

Here's a nighttime photo of the reinforcement frame at the rear. It's not exactly independent from the sides, but it's really isolated.

Whats' weird is that the doors are actually built into a reinforced steel frame at the rear, which is not on any other model with the regular tailgate. So I'm not sure what the braces actually do. My dealership seems to think they're unnecessary and removing them to install a tonneau cover...

My biggest concern is with finding a tonneau cover that fits. I need one that flips and locks, and I was looking at the Mopar hard tonneau, simply because the onus to make it work would be on the dealership. The one I really want is the Lomax, but I need some proof that it fits first.

You can get closer to the bed without the tailgate in the way. Easier access to cargo, easier to load heavy items without going over the tailgate, and easier to step into the bed because you're not climbing over the tailgate. It's just...easier. Sent from my SM-G975U1 using Tapatalk

I'm with you regarding the function over form, especially in this case. I usually install a Bedslide into my trucks to make it easier to get cargo in/out. With the Dual Function tailgate, I'm not going to need a Bedslide, so I'm saving $1000. And, because the middle portion of the rear bumper...

Here's mine. Bought it right off the showroom floor. The discount was ridiculous, but the inventory limited, so I took what they had. Only thing I didn't get was surround-view cameras because of the stupid Tow Group being added.
