UPDATE: Here it is, folks. One of the MDS lifters in 6 and one in 4 failed. The pins inside the lifter spun out of place, no longer lining up with the holes. Zoom in on the bottom lifter in the photo and you'll see what I mean.
None of the rollers are damaged/loose. Sent the borescope down and...
It depends what is causing the tick. These engines aren't quiet. Sometimes the tick is nothing. You hear people driving with it for years with no issue. That tick is where the thicker oil would help. But if the tick is coming from a frozen lifter slowly eating the cam, no amount of oil is going...
Totally understand that. It's an odds game. I'm on the hunt for metal before I go to pulling the head. I ran a magnet through the old oil, no metal. I pulled the OCV valve to look for metal on the screens as Chrysler recommends, nothing. Clean as a whistle. I pulled the valve cover on the...
UPDATE: I'm currently in a holding pattern. I ordered parts from Mopar, but still waiting for them to arrive. In the meantime, I've come up with my plan. I sent an oil sample off to Blackstone. If that sample comes back with lots of metal in the oil, then I am going to return the parts and sell...
UPDATE: The confusion continues. Pulled the valve cover off the passenger side. There's a little side to side play on the rockers, but im told that's normal. There's no up/down play which would point to a failed lifter. So now I'm not so sure I have a bad lifter after all. Here's a video. What...
UPDATE: Out of an abundance of.... well... paranoia, I started checking the oil for metal shavings. I still have the old oil from my last oil change. I dunke a retrieval magnet in it.... no metal bits on the magnet. I took a sample in a glass jar. I don't see any glitter. I let it sit overnight...
UPDATE: I'm a little more optimistic
I should rephrase to "best oil I can get here". Redline isn't easy to find in this town. I've been running Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w-20 (that's the vis recommended in my owners manual). The first year or so I owned it I ran Royal purple as I have in every...
Appreciate all that info. I double and triple checked the old oil I dropped last week for metal shavings. Don't see any glitter. I scooped a magnet through the oil as well. No metal on the magnet. If the tick is the lifter smacking the cam, I'd expect to see metal, but I don't.
Haven't had a...
Had my old school mechanic dad listen to it. Sounds like the ticking is coming from cylinder 6 or 8. He doesn't think it's lifters. To him he said it sounds like valve slap. Far as I understand, there's no valve adjustment that can be done on these. Thankfully, I'm 100% sure it isn't rod knock...
UPDATE: got the passenger side replaced, which is where the ticking was coming from.
Unfortunately, no change to the tick. I still need to change the driver side, but it's looking like I have something else going on. Rolling around under the vehicle, it definitely sounds like it's coming from...
UPDATE: the old manifold is off. No broken bolts. A couple of them turned pretty easily, so maybe loose bolts were part of my problem. Taking a little break from the texas heat and I'll get the new one installed.
Crazy thing: few seconds after I pulled the old manifold out and set it on the...
Im gonna wait, for sure. I'm just anxious. Lol. I got the heat shield and flange bolts removed. So now I'm staring at the few remaining bolts and fighting back the demon on my shoulder that keeps saying "go on....try one. Just give it a little torque. Do it. Dooooo it."
Blargh! I'm gonna put...
Rain is delayed till tomorrow....so awwwaaaayyyy we go. I keep fighting the urge to skip waiting for the penetrating oil to do it's thing and try to remove the bolts.......but I'm gonna be a good boy. Lol wish me luck, guys.
yes, I know the truck is dirty. Yes, I know that's criminal. Baby has...
UPDATE: Drove to San Antonio where the parts shipped from and exhanged them. Finally have the parts.......aaaaannndd now the forecast is for rain the next 3 days. Hahaha! If I had a garage, that'd be great, but now I gotta wait on the weather. Oh well. I'll just spray the bolts every morning...
I agree with you on not taking my vehicle to dealers for work. With any vehicle I've ever owned, I will only ever let a dealer work on it if it is a recall or under warranty. They can do all the work they want to on it if it's free. LOL. Other than that I will either do the work myself, or if...
UPDATE: The dealership won't budge on the shipping issue and they are insisting I send back the entire order, not just the damaged gaskets. That's an expensive shipping fee. The more I look at the gaskets, I can clearly see tool marks and some carbon they didn't clean off...... these aren't...
UPDATE: Parts arrived today...... buuuuutttt check out how everything was packaged. I ordered the whole kit. Gasket, bolts, heat shield, and manifold. Everything is just thrown in the box. No packing material to prevent damage. The gaskets are damaged, because of course they are.
I called the...
Definitely a temporary financial situation. Just one of those times where something else expensive and more important broke (home AC) so I had to cut costs on this repair.
I think haynes has an online manual for our truck. They just aren't producing the printed manuals anymore.....at least I...
