WXman good post with valid points. You’ve been paying attention for a while and thinking things through for yourself. Kudos. And I cannot say you are wrong. However while I agree you need clean fuel today that is achievable from either newer higher volume stations or any properly maintained...
Fair. Related to that lots who come from gas trucks don’t know or fully understand the importance of regularly changing the fuel filter water separator on their first diesel truck.
Couldn’t risk it.. does the ED injectors have a higher failure rate than the Hemi injectors? Doubt it. If not did you actually lower your “risk” at all? Would the remaining 90,000 miles of warranty have been more risky than a fresh 60k warranty on a new gas truck? I don’t think injectors are a...
A few winters ago they had the “polar vortex” in MN WI and I was up in it. Think it was like negative 45 one morning and negative 41 the next. Staying in a hotel I brought an extension cord. Asked the hotel & they had a few outside accessible outlets.
Plugged in with weather front she fired...
As a TT transporter with 725,000 miles on 2014 Ecodiesel truck, my focus for safety & stability is (My priority may not be the first priority of those focused on payload numbers) weight distribution of axle & tongue weights as seen by the CAT scale.
Not to exceed (5th gen) axle weights (3,900...
Sounds like by chance you have it working acceptably. I’ll bet your wet weight is more like 7,500 & tongue weight (TW) at least 900. The way to improve the stability safety & confidence with which it tows is to spend the $20 bucks and get your unloaded truck and loaded with TT & WDH scale slips...
What is the weight rating for the 5 larger lugs vs the 6 smaller lugs of the new Ram or a ford or Chevy. I have heard this idea before knocking the Ram 5 lugs vs other 6 lugs on competing company forums but never anything to substantiate it.
Understanding and using the CAT scale properly is far better than any guesstimate the best guestimator at a dealership can do. You are already on the right track.
You need the slip of just your truck. Unloaded steer & drive axle weights.
Then we can tell you your actual TW (tongue weight)...
If you pulled off 12.1 with the Hemi that’s real good. You would likely have gotten the same fuel economy towing with the 3.92 it just would have accelerated it more quickly & easily. The aero Airstream helps it generally seems to be a solid 1 mpg better than an aero box TT & 1.5 mpg better...
Towing hauling over GVWR is not un-common with TT owners of all 1/2 ton makes. If you are going to tow & haul a heavy load you should Cat scale it for a safe stable setup. Otherwise you are taking foolish risk. Set up is key. So I believe with the 5th gen thats not more than 3,900 steer axle...
Honestly 700k towing TTs across the country for the Mfgrs using a half ton truck. You’re payload number being your most important number is the most repeated fallacy IMO. Sure it’s generally the first Mfgr spec number you exceed. As to it’s importance well it has little to do with setting up a...
Trina read through the thread you would want to set it up well. If you only have the 3.6 motor and the 3.21 the 5,800 ish pound wet weight would be slow accelerating but would do the job. One of the other motors or gear choices would be a better match for that job.
The air plane spotters think the only thing wrong is “sag”.
When the reality is with no weight on the steer tires they have squirrelly handling with a raised center of gravity. If they have to swerve around someone or they get trailer sway they are likely to end up backward upside down in the...
My1stHemi, Sure just from measurements you can normally get it in the zone so to speak where it will help a lot. Assuming you are starting with appropriate size spring bars for your trailer/ tongue weight. Lol. That said some consumers never research instructions etc and have no concept of the...
Glad you posted Truck 1 and thanks for the pics. Bags alone helps to a point. Fixing sag only is a side benefit & helps with the looks but does little for the bigger issues which is why Ram recomends a WDH for trailers over 5k especially TTs. You might study the last two posts and consider...
The Andersen is doing its job if it has replaced your unloaded steer weight. Unloaded steer weight Ideally being taken from a truck only scale slip. But 3,500 should be about right for a limited with Hemi & Etorque. You also need the unloaded truck only weight slip to use with the slip you...
Agreed the Andersen will not move the virtual pivot point. No WDH will require perfect loading to work effectively just in the zone so to speak with axle weights & distribution as well as tongue weight with that it really should not push your truck around. Combined axle weight on your loaded...
Turin post your truck and truck plus TT Cat scale slips. Bet I can show you how to get most if not all of that sway out for less than $20. Best case scenario for testing not that I’m recommending that you do this but is a fast moving close passing Semi truck. The bow wave pushes then sucks as...
I know you asked for dougs thoughts but I’ll throw mine in as I use the Andersen and tow TTs for the Mfgrs to their dealerships nationwide with the 4th gen Ram ED. Plenty of which go through windy Wyoming & New Mexico.
65 mph gusts mean you should probably stop & take a brake no matter your...
