My dad had a Ford Contour and it would do the same exact thing. It ended up beign a bad fuel pump. The fuel pump was on top of the fuel tank.

In the owners guide, it says 89 octane is recommended but 87 octane is acceptable. It doesn't tell you why 89 is recommended. ex: for max performance, better fuel economy etc.

I don't feel the need to go out and buy a thermometer to measure the temps coming out the vents. To me (And my passengers) it's more about how we feel.

I don't believe the drop in MPG is that dramatic. It really depends on weather you can make the MPG loss up by driving for a while at highway speeds. That being said, that's the price you pay if you want a comfortable cabin. I also auto start my vehicles when it's below freezing.
