I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this, but I've seen a few posts and comments about adding a second camera to the Digital Rearview Mirror but haven't seen any solutions. I apologize if I missed something or am duplicating information. I tried to cover everything here but let me know if there are any questions.
I installed the digital rearview mirror A WHILE ago (using this post) and put the 2-input option in with hopes of adding a second camera on my camper. Piecing everything together was frustrating, including figuring out which specific camera I needed, how to safely mount for it on the camper, etc. And then I found this camera relocation kit. It’s made for people with a topper or camper on their truck. It allows you to move your camera from the CHMSL to the back of the truck - extending the existing Fakra cable at the CHMSL to the back of the truck.
I couldn’t get the part number on the camera, but the pictures looked like the MOPAR camera so I took a risk and bought it. As soon as it arrived, I plugged it in to the other input on the mirror and it worked! My DRVM normally shows the display from the CHMSL but will automatically change over to the camper cam when it's plugged in.
The Fakra cable included with the kit wasn’t long enough to so I ordered new Fakra cables from an eBay shop. They were extremely responsive answering questions and the shipping was quick too. I got a 25’ cable to go from the mirror to the back of the truck and a 180" cable to finish the camper run. After running the cables, I realized I should have gotten the 30’ for the truck because I wound up getting a 3' extension to reach where I wanted it to go.
My battle trying to snake the wire down through the wall was comically sad so I mounted the camera on the camper’s back wall, just under the rear window and ran the wire through the wall and straight down through the floor, using a simple Amazon hide-a-wire down the wall. The wire is routed up the camper using the propane line as a guide and then up the a-frame. I wrapped it up with the wire harness to keep it in place with enough slack for each to plug in without worrying about them getting yanked out on turns.
As for the connection point on the truck, I combined this to this and then attached it to this bracket which attaches to the truck. I drilled a hole in the back of the tow harness connector to allow the fakra cable to come through. When not in use, I can push it back in and the connector lid is able to close and should keep out water/dirt.
