Well, by the recommendation someone knows his way around a hurricane very well, I changed the oil at 665 miles before an upcoming towing trip. (Recommended 500-1000 to get any unwanted leftovers out).

Coming from a 21 hemi this oil change is a million times easier. Not completely without dripping on the crossmember but a lot better than the hemi and can be done with the truck on the ground. I wasn’t sure exactly how the procedure for the oil level sensor reset worked so I did it on level ground just in case.

Filter was too tight but nowhere near as tight as the one on my hemi when it was new. Way down and easy to access by the drain plug/pan. Apparently someone listened and tried.

Filling was easy. You still have to reset the OLM like the old trucks. Resetting the oil level goes like this best I can tell. Change oil and restart truck until oil temp reaches 180°. Shut down and put ignition into run but do not start. Restart truck after the 5 min waiting period(ignition in run the whole time). I didn’t receive any confirmation the calibration had been completed or was successful and my oil level is exactly the same as it was before the change.

I read about overfilling on the gauge so I put in 7.25 ish instead of 7.5. Figured there might be a little left since it was on level ground.

Hopefully this will help someone else out on their first try.

Side bar: all the aluminum parts under this truck seem suspiciously fuzzy/corroded. Engine/pan/trans/T case/knuckles. All the other steel coated surfaces look brand new except for uncoated stuff. Curious if anyone else had seen the same.

When I did my first oil change, I also only used 7.25 quarts. Figured its easier to add a little than to take away.

After following the procedure twice, and driving it a few dozen miles, the meter is still showing almost exactly where it was prior to the oil change on my truck as well. I figured I'll just check it every once in a while to make sure it doesn't show low someday in the near future, as its supposed to do its own check now-and-then.

This is a weird miss from the software devs and/or engineers, you'd think there would be a "press OK to check level" option for you to manually use the sensor. They could always have it display an error "oil not up to temp" or something if we tried to do a manual check before it hit whatever parameters they wanted it to hit. I wonder why they didn't do that.

1/4 of a quart won't show any difference in oil level. Truck will think it's full. If you weren't low on oil before the change why would the level read different after the change? Next time, try only dumping in 6qts to start with, leaving you 1.5 qts low and see what the oil level displays after the recalibration procedure. And as long as you aren't revving the engine, and just let it idle, there will be no issues from the purposely low oil level.
