Oil Cooler Issue on 5.7L HEMI – How Common?

Hello, I recently purchased a used 2023 Rebel with the 5.7L HEMI (about 35k miles). I had all the fluids serviced at a local shop, and during that process the mechanic noticed traces of oil in the coolant. I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a leaking oil cooler. They also performed a block test to rule out combustion gases in the cooling system, and it came back negative — so no signs pointing to a head gasket issue.
From what I’m reading, it seems like oil cooler failures aren’t unheard of on the 5.7L HEMI platform. I’m new to Ram trucks, so I wanted to ask the community: is this a fairly common issue on these engines, and are there any long-term concerns I should keep an eye on?

Appreciate any insight — thanks in advance.

There is a thread about it, not sure how common, but common enough to have a full thread talking about it.

I remember something about earlier trucks having the issue until they updated the cooler. Best way to see early systems is to check the radiator expansion tank dip stick for any brown residue, along with the radiator cap (when cold of course).

I forgot if it's the engine or transmission oil cooler that was the issue.

Get it changed as soon as you can; it only gets worse, with bigger problems.

Yes, the dealer swapped it immediately under warranty. As a follow-up, I've been checking the under the radiator cap before a cold start periodically and all seems good.

Just finished changing my oil cooler (oil heater). Failed and sent oil into my cooling system. Now going through flushing the cooling system to get rid of the oil. The torque on the cooler that sits just above the oil filter is supposed to be 18-22 ft lbs.. My stock one was on so tight I could barely get it off with my torque wrench. Probably why it failed.
