Looking to purchase 25/26 Ram Limited Longhorn-
V8 better option than I6?

Forums causing me to second guess... If you read enough, every manufacturer has their share of engine issues. Toyota, GMC, Ford- they ALL have major issues. Was hoping Ram would be a safer bet. Looks like the V8 better reliability?

Thanks in advance

The eTorque appears to hurt the v8's reliability, especially if it's hard to find a replacement MGU.
The Hurricane is more complex and has more failure points, but we're not really seeing that pan out.
Still better than most of the GM options. Ford's engines seem to be fairing better, but the 10-speed transmission isn't nearly as good as the ZF8 in the RAM's.
On the RAMs, it appears electrical things are a bigger issue than drivetrain things.

Hello,

I had a 2019 limited with the 5.7 and eTorque. I just traded up to a 2026 limited longhorn with the high output inline 6. I’ve experienced both now and I’ll say the 5.7 definitely has that amazing sound coming from a v8. eTorque is one of the better implementations of start stop tech I’ve ever seen. Very smooth, smoother than the inline 6. That being said…I would say that eTorque is a reliability point of failure that I’m glad I’m not running anymore. I have been reading dozens of folks who have their MGU failing. I felt like my 48v battery struggled to charge in my 2019. I had at least a few instances of a check engine light related to hybrid battery performance. I ended up shutting off ESS due to those codes.

I’ll also say the HO hurricane brings significantly more power to the table. So far I’m really enjoying it. I do miss that sound of the V8 though. Hope that helps…

Take it for what it is worth, I've only owned one Ram, my 2023 Ram 5.7 with e-torque, 4X4, Lone Star edition. It has been the model of reliability and other than the small 23 gallon fuel tank, which is my biggest pet peeve, I have no complaints. I think the odds of you getting a reliable Ram without issues are probably much higher than not. I've driven a Ram with the SO Hurricane and it's mid range power and tq is haunting my dreams, I loved it. If I were getting a Ram today, I'd get the Hurricane motor, and I love driving V8's, the sound, the rumble, the connection with the motor. But there is no denying the Hurricane pulls like a freight train, the motor is smooth, and quiet. That isn't always a good thing, but a bonus if that is what you like.

Would love to see some examples of reliability issues from the Hurricane engine all these “window shoppers” keep citing when they post these questions on here and Facebook. I’m starting to think these are bots from GM and toyota designed to insert doubt in a rather solid engine platform that other manufacturers can’t seem to conjure as of late.

The hurricanes have been out almost 5 years now.
Yes there are problems, but so are others, now electrical is another issue.
And all makes and models are having their problems.

Given all of the issues with most of the manufacturers mentioned, I believe you would be remiss to not consider the I6. As mentioned, the 10yr/100k warranty is unmatched by any other manufacturer. I was in your position late 2025 and I felt RAM was the safer bet, as was the I6, which is relatively new, but HP/Torque exceeds the Hemi. That being said, dealership resources are critically important in that decision, as it goes hand in hand with the warranty. I'm not looking forward to using the warranty, but I don't want my truck sitting at a dealership for weeks or months waiting for parts. Good luck with your decision.

The SST HO is a better engine, technology wise, performance wise and service wise, in my opinion. Plus it's lighter than a HEMI; the ride and feel of my truck with the SST HO is phenominal. Plus the HO is smooth, refined and much quieter than the HEMI. If I want to hear some noise, I ride my Harley with straight pipes. You won't regret the HO.
