Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from those with more experience on this topic.

I have a 2022 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie, 5.7L HEMI (non-eTorque), currently at 40,000 km. The truck is completely stock and used strictly as a daily driver. I drive mostly short distances, I’m a gentle driver, and I don’t tow or haul.

I’ve been reading about oil catch cans, but I’ll be honest — I don’t know much about them or whether they’re truly necessary for my type of driving. I’ve seen products like the Mishimoto direct bolt-on catch can, which looks well-made and easy to install.

My questions are:

  • For my driving habits, is an oil catch can actually beneficial?
  • Is this more of a “nice-to-have” preventative mod, or unnecessary in my case?
  • Have any of you installed one on a similar setup and noticed real long-term benefits?
  • Are there any downsides (maintenance, cold weather issues, etc.) I should consider?

I plan on keeping the truck long-term and want to take good care of it, but I also don’t want to add parts that don’t provide meaningful value.

Any insight or real-world experience would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

THe truck does not "need" one. And it's effectiveness is really up to you as far as being worth it. I personally wouldn't spend the money on the JLT or Mishimoto ones. You can get catch cans that do the exact same thing for under $60 on Amazon or eBay. I use one on most of my vehicles. Including my RAM. I empty about 2 oz out every 2000 miles. And so try to empty it every 2000 miles just to stay consistent, and it allows me to check on health of engine s little. If it starts having more, without any environmental factors, then I know I can start keeping an eye on the engine as it may be time for a rebuild. It also keeps all that crap out of the intake and combustion chamber where it can leave deposits

This is one of those questions that you'll probably get a lot of conflicting information. Basically, HSKR R/T summed it up pretty well. Catch cans are more effective on a gasoline direct injected engine, especially if it's turbocharged. And not really needed on a port injection engine like the Hemi. But it can help keep the inside of your intake manifold cleaner.

with the amount of oil it collects I'd say it's worth the money, but you certainly do not NEED it. It's one of those things that can do good if you have it, and not going to cause damage without.
pretty much what HSKR R/T said.

i went with Billet Technology because it's made in USA (Lake Worth, FL) and not China. I am a firm believer in supporting American manufacturing, so if there are options to choose a Made in US for more money, I'll go with that instead of Made in China for less money - it is up to us, the consumers, to keep American manufacturing going. Besides, it doesn't make sense to me when I am getting the benefits of being paid American wages and then complain about a product with a price tag that feeds another American. The only exception is when there's no better option (like iphones, my Ecoflows, etc)

I am in the camp of why not the benefits outweigh the investment if one has the means just like a cold air intake or a lift or any other mod. I have a can on all my hemi's throughout the years and every time I empty it I am glad I installed one.

completely unnecessary. turbo or/and direct injection yes but your hemi no.
