Getting the Fox 2.5s, but running spacers in the back instead of getting longer springs. Am I crazy?

I feel like I am, but i'm not sure what else to do.

I am looking for about a 2.5 inch lift, and plan to drive the truck a lot off road but with either a camper that weighs 1000 lbs with all the gear in it, or with nothing in the bed at all. 0 lbs.

I do not see a shock setup that allows me to get the performance I'm looking for other than the fox 2.5s.

Carli makes good rear springs for higher static loads, but I won't always have the camper.

Ideally, I imagine, I would get a softer spring that is longer so I get the desired lift and also is designed for only the weight of the truck. Then, if I throw the camper in, I can pump up some airbags to level the load better.

The problem is that I don't know of any airbags that fit about a 1.5 inch lift in the back. The only workable solution I see that gives me a good ride without the camper is stock springs with a spacer. Then, since its a spacer, I can throw the firestone airbags in and pump it up with the camper to level.

Is this a bad idea? Is there some other obvoius solution?

You'll be fine. I'm running the Airlift 1000's because I need to eliminate squat in my rear on Eibach rear lift springs under load. It's the rear end so pucks won't be an issue for you.
 
I'm running Airlift Bags and offset spacers in my OEM Rear coils..a 1" spacer under the LR and a 0.5" spacer under the RR.
This makes me a dead level side to side and netted me 0.75-0.875" in the rear (to go with my Level +1" in Front).
There are no geometrical or mechanical issues with spacers in the rear, only in the front.

spacers on springs for solid axle rear is fine.
you can also look into Clayton Jeep JT rear springs too.

How much of a lift do the springs give? So the airlift 1000s work just fine even with longer than stock springs? I'd rather do that setup and have a longer spring if I can help it.

Mine were advertised as 1-1.5. But since Rebel is ORG it could only be stock or .5. I got the .5. That said, I believe it has been confirmed that is no longer the case and you will not get lift on the new ones. Just give Eibach a call to confirm. They are great guys.

Ah so the idea there is that Jeep JT springs will allow me to start with a softer than stock ride, which i stiff as I want with the airbags?

no it will actually be harder than stock ride, which is fine. those springs will give you the lift you want without using spacers, and can take some weight. but if you're talking about a 1klb camper (hopefully you're not putting a slide in... there's a sheet of paper that came with the truck that tells you do NOT put in slide in campers) the first spring rate is used to handle the weight.
