I just got my windshield tinted (UV only, didn't darken it) and they told me not to mount anything to it with adhesive. I had a gate pass RFID sticker that they suggested Sticker Shield for as it's more of a static cling and is supposed to be friendly with tinted windows.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to do about my dashcam because I imagine the weight would be way too much for the sticker shield product. It's a Cobra SC400D. I know there are lighter ones but I'm happy with my camera. I saw a thread where someone wants to mount it in the dash cubby. That would be ok, but I'd love to have it back where it was.

Any suggestions? Is there anything it could mount to that has an "arm" that slides up above the headliner?

I haven't tried this, but maybe I can find a way to mount it to the black housing for the active cruise control, etc... behind the mirror?

I've never been told not to mount a dash cam to tint. Only restriction was to wait a few days before mounting it. Last time I had a windshield tinted the shop even gave me Some 3m double sided adhesive to reattatch my dash cam.

ive had to remove and re-install my dash cam twice on my tinted windshield with 0 issues. just make sure you warm the area to release the adhesive and done!

I've had ezpass plastic "Velcro" and double sided 3m tape stuck and unstuck to tint in the same spot many times with no issue. Just wait a few days until it's dry and be careful what your doing and you'll be fine. For double sided tape use some heat and roll instead of peel.

Sticker Shield (from Amazon), use a bit of an oversized piece, but allows easy removal. Use the same for toll tags and rego stickers.

I have a Vantrue in my truck with a suction cup mount that works great.

I live in Las Vegas. I have not had any luck with suction cups to the bare window because they just fall off like every day during the summer heat or even melt. I'm not sure what it would do to the tinted window, but I instead just epoxied my cams to the plastic housing in front of the mirror on a couple of my cars. Seems to keep it conveniently out of the way, and I no longer have issues with it falling off. If I can't pry the cam off when upgrading, etc., I'll just buy a new cover. I had tried finding like the strongest double sided tape, and they worked for a while, but fell off after approximately a month.

Sounds like a Fitcamx would be a better option for you

Thanks for all the feedback. I actually didn't realize so many responses had come in. I checked back with the installer and he said it's ok to mount the camera with the adhesive mount, but to pick a place I want to leave it permanently as removing it MAY mess up the tint. So, I'm going with that (the tint was less than my camera) and will follow 1BAD's advice and warm the area before removing--if I ever have to remove it.

Thanks, everyone!

As long as you don't use a knife to get under the adhesive if you need to remove it you should be fine. I've also installed and removed my adhesive dashcam mount multiple times to my tinted windshield. No issues as long as you don't use a knife or Hulk it off and somehow pull the tint.

Well. I tried mounting it yesterday with a new adhesive pad on the camera, since the old one had lost its stick while sitting exposed for a week.

The camera won't stay stuck to the tint. It stays for a moment but then falls off. I will have to keep playing with it or maybe try the above suggestion of a large piece of sticker shield.

The adhesive that comes with dash cams is trash. Get some of the 3M Automotive Double-Sided Molding Tape (available at Wally World), should have a red backing tape. Clean off the mounting surface with an alcohol wipe. Apply the tape and if your camera is removable from the mount, let it sit for ~24 hours if possible without the camera attached.

Good dash cams use 3m adhesive. It's unclear what OP is using to try and reattach it as he said the original stuff isn't good anymore after being removed for tint and sitting exposed for weeks

What are you using for double sided adhesive tape? Did you prep the windshield properly by cleaning with alcohol and the adhesive primer?

There is also a lot of "replica" 3M Adhesive thats used on those from China, I've found that stuff mentioned works well, and has held up in 105+ days in AZ, and even 129 in Death Valley during 2023!

I used a spare 3M adhesive pad that came with the camera. I didn't prep though because I assumed it was cleaned after they installed the film. I will give it a shot though. I am missing having the camera.
