You wouldn't necessarily see a "jump" if it's a rolling average. The more consistent your driving habits, the less noticeable it would be. I've also seen someone say it's a rolling average over as little as 200 miles, although 500 makes more sense to me, and here's why... I've put about 12k...

Others can chime in here if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that neither trip counter calculates past 500 miles. So that 30.4 avg is over your last 500 miles, even though it says 9837.
