Dealer Quote for Brakes is $2K - Thinking to do it myself

Yeah, I've got a pretty significant braking shimmy now, which I'm not surprised by since the truck has 130K miles and I drive pretty fast. It might be possible to machine them, but my approach was to replace.

Dealer Quote for Brakes is $2K - Thinking to do it myself

I know right. This price was for front and rear rotors, front and rear brake pads, and the labor to change them. $2K. I was stunned. Given it was a dealer, I was expecting maybe as much as $1K, and at that price or high hundreds I might have said yes, but I was shocked. The service advisor...

Dealer Quote for Brakes is $2K - Thinking to do it myself

Thanks for the encouragement - I'm with you guys. This is the second time I've had a quote from Key Chrysler in Xenia OH that seemed exorbitant. This is also coincidentally the second local dealer I've worked with since owning the truck - the first (Dave Dennis Chrysler in Dayton OH) had super...

Dealer Quote for Brakes is $2K - Thinking to do it myself

Finally time to replace the brakes on my 2019, and the dealer quoted me a little over $2K, of which 1,500 or so was for the parts. I've done brakes before, and after watching a couple YT videos tonight, it looks pretty straightforward. Wondering where you guys buy parts, and if there are any...

Standard Coil vs. Air Suspension - my back to back review FWIW

Yes. It's counter intuitive, because everyone assumes the air suspension must be softer, which in commercial trucks it always is because the competitors are leaf springs or parabolics. To some it's anathema to suggest otherwise but test the Ram 1500 back to back for yourself. I did a lot of...

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

Not sure how hard it is to get in there and photograph it. I had photographs of the crack in each manifold that were taken by the dealer and it looked basically like the photo someone posted earlier in this thread - a crack in each near the center of the casting.

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

    You were right. Cheers.

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

OK, it's obvious to me now that you have no idea what you're talking about. Good casting design and manufacturing processes solves this. 2% is appalling and never should make it to the field. By your logic, you'd also be fine with 2% of engine blocks failing, 2% of head castings failing, 2%...

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

Easy. Cast iron as a material for casting is made in batches. You specify the proper cast iron for the job, as there are many classes and microstructures. You specify the inclusions your design will allow. Whenever a batch is made, you also pour a sample for quality assurance and check it...

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

Again, an extreme response. Everyone knows nothing is ever 100%, so you belabor an undisputed point here and previously. The point was is should be very rare, and indeed it is in much of the automotive world. Here it is more prevalent. I don't accept for a moment it needs to be. It is...

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

Respectfully, I couldn't disagree more. The "nothing is perfect" defense is weak. Cracked castings should happen almost never, and in the vast majority of models within the automotive kingdom, you almost never hear of it, and yet we hear of them frequently here. I am a mechanical engineer by...

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

Follow-up: I did receive a $1,500 refund on this issue, which I was grateful for. I'm still surprised at the reaction of some on this thread, defending an obvious defect to any length. Yes, I do expect a vehicle not to have one, let alone two, cracked exhaust manifolds in 60,000, or 80,000 or...

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

@Finn5033 Thanks for your reasonable response. I went and picked up the truck today because we need it. The final bill was $1,855.98 after tax. Here are the details for you: Read that - it says both exhaust manifolds were cracked in the middle! I'm sorry guys, that is garbage quality in...

    Cracked Exhaust? Really?

Wow, I can’t believe your defending this defect. I don’t know anything about Titans but since Titans have a problem, you’re Ok with it? Castings are not wear items. Mileage isn’t the issue. Frankly, I’d argue I’ve had fewer thermal cycles due to fewer start stops so my case is less strenuous on...
