I literally had 18 miles till empty and my trucks marks 13 mpg. So I assume it had about a gallon and a half. I put in 100 dollars for some 89 octane @ $3.61. Why did the fuel tank mark at full? Like it had no more room to go up anymore. Also This thing guzzles gas. Idk why but my previous 2014 ram would get about 17 mpg and this one only gets high 13's.

Engine has to break in, right? MPG always suffers at first.

Almost all modern vehicles have extra fuel in reserve, usually enough to drive an extra 50-75 miles past empty. Just because the car says you have 18 miles to empty doesn't mean you are literally going to run out of gas in 18 miles. 1) It is just an estimation anyways 2) They are conservative because they want you to get to a gas station and not get stranded or damage things like fuel pumps because of fuel starvation.

Because people use trucks for towing which kills mpg the large gas tank gives you are relatively large reserve. FCA doesn't know how you will be using your vehicle when it gets low on gas.

No matter what vehicle you drive, none of them will be empty when they say empty. The fuel pump requires a certain amount of fuel to keep cool, plus, if everyone and their brother pushed their tanks that close to "real empty" all the time, you'd see a whole lot more people on the side of the road, and they'd all be complaining that there wasn't extra fuel just in case when it said empty. Additionally, there has to be some margin built in, as the sending units are surprisingly not nearly as accurate as one would think. The fuel gauge readout you see is an average of multiple samples over a certain period of time.

Edit: @Whynot beat me to it

My 2016 sierra and my 2014 ram were decent from the start. I got about 2k miles in the ram right now. Even my 2018 ram 2500 cummins with a 2k lb welding machine in the back gets 15 mpg and it only has about 3k miles

The Low Fuel Message appeared yesterday at exactly 50 miles to empty. I continued to drive throughout the day, at times seeing a low of 31 miles to empty, then to the point when the Low Fuel Message appeared all the time. At that point I filled the tank and the truck took 29.931 gallons. I have the 33 gallon tank.

After the fill the cluster was reporting that I had 706 miles to empty.

I’m confident you have all 33 gallons available. On my 2012 I had a situation (power outage along Nebraska highway) that required me to drive 32 past LOW, which comes on at 10 miles. I put in 25.6 gallons (and that was packing the tank). I never ran out.

This is confidence inspiring actually!
I had the 32 gallon tank on my 4th Gen Rebel, the most I EVER got into that tank, ever, was 27.7gallons.
And it was absolutely obnoxious to get it that low.
At 50mi computer range, it won't let you auto start.
At 25mi range, more warnings from the computer.
I drove down to 10mi and got 27.7 after giving it every last click it could handle.

If I filled at say the 55mi mark, I want to say it took like 24 gallons.
Very frustrating to get a 32gallon tank and effectively have a 24 "except in case of emergency".

Finding out my truck might go up to 29gal or 30 on a fill? I'm happy about that.

To those that know and understand the limits of their vehicle, it may seem to be an annoyance. But not all owners are careful and can sometimes put themselves and others in jeopardy by running out of fuel in the wrong time or wrong place.

I've heard this complaint many times from owners of different vehicles. ( I had a Nissan that would trigger the low fuel warning 5 gallons before the end of the tank.) Manufacturers are being cautious in this regard for the safety and convenience of their customers.

Best regards,
Dusty

I'm getting right about the exact same crappy mileage as my 2011 Sport.

I have the 26G tank, I never let it get too low and I fill it a lot! I'm averaging right around 16MPG (mostly highway) at 1800 miles, which is slightly better than I was for the first couple of weeks, but I do not drive slow. I thought it would be a little better on gas. I'm trying not to get on it too much, but it ain't easy..

If the tank is empty when it says empty people will know it's close to empty. Now no one really knows which I think caused the issue. It's called social responsibility. People need to fill up before it gets empty

The MOST gas I have been able to put in the tank is 31.375. I think we can figure this out. This is pretty simple . . . someone has run their truck til empty (and yes, I know this is bad for the fuel pump) and then filled it up. I am low on gas in my 1500 eTorque. I think I am going to go full on Kramer today or over the next few days and share with everyone. This will be me . . .

IIRC the trucks are supposed to come from the factory with 5 gallons of fuel. When yours salesman goes to fill it up after the sale have him write down how much gas that took.

I fill up shortly after my light comes on. Each time I out in almost exactly 28.5 gallons. My range says around 50-55 miles, which divided by my average of about 13-14 mpg is pretty dead on for the remaining 4.5 gallons or so in my tank.

I test drove a limited that registered empty when we started the truck. I pointed it out to the salesman, he promptly replied “we are good to go”. Found myself sitting on the side of the road waiting for gas in the truck of the year 1 mile from the dealership. Nothing says Truck of the year like appearing to be broken down 1 mile off the lot. I laughed and clowned on the sales guy a bit.

On another ancient thread, I wrote, "I filled up for just the third time yesterday...26.4 gallons with ~80 miles range left. I averaged 16 MPG, suggesting I had room for 5 more gallons in the tank. Seems about right!" I'll admit that I typically don't push it to the end of the range.

So, my last fill-up was the highest number of gallons yet, 31.440. I drove it past the point where it gave a number for the range, so it read "low" for a rage remaining "number". My guess is that somewhere between 1 and 1.5 gallons or about 15 to 22 miles of range were left. its seems like the fuel level indication system is trying to keep you safe from running empty by giving you about a 2 gallon buffer. This is good to know, because when you take long trips, you kinda what to know how much range you really have. So basically if you run to the point where your range goes from a number to "low" you have about 2 gallons worth of range left. I was hoping to get more range out of this truck with having an eTorque. Looks like 600+ mile rage is a pipe dream. So far the best tank MPG I have been able to manage is 16.6. the other 4 fill-ups have been around 15.1. I guess I can blame 3.91 and 22s? Hoping a bed cover will get me a 0.5 mi/gal bump, I doubt it tho.
