5thGenRams.com was at the Chicago Auto Show back in February for the debut of the Ram Multifunction Tailgate. The Multifunction Tailgate in addition to retaining the capabilities of a fully dampened, drop-down tailgate with remote release options, adds a first-of-its-kind 60-40 split, swing-away functionality. Unlike other multi-element tailgates, the Multifunction Tailgate is trailer-friendly and does not require that the trailer and hitch be removed before opening. With a 2,000-lb. load rating, Ram multifunction tailgate retains all of the traditional tailgate’s capability.
While the tailgate is an impressive setup, Ram Truck engineers told the 5thGenRams staff that the new Multifunction Tailgate must have the optional RamBox cargo management system. However, our spy photographers caught a 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel prototype without the RamBox system but equipped with the new Multifunction Tailgate.
We reached out to Ram Trucks for a more clear answer of the new availability of the Multifunction Tailgate. Ram stated that the Multifunction Tailgate would only be bundled with the “Bed Utility Group”. Now for those of you who don’t know what the Bed Utility Group consist of 4-Adjustable Cargo Tie-Down Hooks, LED Bed Lighting, and Truck Bed Cargo Divider (which is unavailable with some configurations) for the price of $395 USD. The Multifunction Tailgate has a price of $995 on its own, for a combined cost of $1,295.
This is good news for those who don’t like the RamBox option on their Rams but want the functionality of the new tailgate design. However, for those who are looking to upgrade their current 2019 Ram 1500 tailgate with the multifunction one, we are told that the Multifunction Tailgate uses a unique electric system and it would require a serious retrofit. But, we are sure there will be some out there that will try.
While we haven’t seen any Multifunction Tailgates yet on lots, with 2020 Ram 1500 production only about a month away, we expect the tailgate might be coming on 2020 models instead of 2019 ones.
