What is eTorque and how does it work?
The 2019 Ram has debuted with FCA’s new eTorque system, standard on Pentastar V6 models and optional with the 5.7 liter Hemi V8. The eTorque system is essentially a mild hybrid system that replaces the alternator with a belt driven generator that performs several different functions. The goal of this system was to improve performance, fuel economy, payload, towing capabilities and drivability.
The generator and 300 watt ithium-ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC)-Graphite battery, work in conjunction to enable quick and seamless start/stop function. Also part of the eTorque system is short-duration torque addition to the engine crankshaft in certain driving situations and brake energy regeneration, which improves responsiveness and efficiency. The eTorque system in the Pentastar V6 is able to add up to 90lb ft of torque when needed while the eTorque system on the 5.7 Hemi V8 is able to add up to 130lb ft of torque.

The real world benefit of all this is of course fuel savings from the electronic start stop feature, but also fuel savings on the Hemi V8 by allowing the engine to stay in 4 cylinder mode longer due to the eTorque system being able to provide extra torque during throttle tip in. The eTorque system also applies torque during transmission shifts to improve shift feel as well as during take off to assist the engine until it gets into the power band resulting in better driveability and better acceleration.
