What could cause this damage to the cam???

Amen to that. I ordered an exhaust manifold, bolts and gasket from Mopar. Paid for overnight, but they shipped standard so I got them a week late, then they refused to refund that shipping. Open the box and everything is literally tossed in with no packing material, so the gasket was shredded...

What could cause this damage to the cam???

Exactly! I'm not leaving ram because my cam shredded. I'm leaving because thousands of people have had the exact same problem through no fault of their own. I'm leaving because of the way Ram/stellantis treats customers after the sale. If this had been just me, or a rare failure, I'd just bite...

That is some great info Thank you that.

What could cause this damage to the cam???

Zip. No play at all. Rolls smooth too with no grit in the bearing. Truck sat parked for several days before I pulled the lifters and they were still WELL coated with oil when I pulled them. I can record a video of the lifters when I get home from work to show ya.

Help with the ole tick tick tick

Oh man, that's a while other bag of crap. Dealers mostly all suck. Mostly. Not all. I'm talking more about recalls. Every manufacturer has released vehicles with faulty parts. It happens. The determining factor for me is how likely that manufacturer is to recall it and make it right by the...

What could cause this damage to the cam???

That is genuinely infuriating. I love these trucks, but the company making them is absolute garbage. I can't support a company that churns out bad parts and then abandons their customers. All vehicles have problems, but some manufacturers stand behind their product more than others. That alone...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

Appreciate your input. This Ram is the only brand new vehicle I've ever owned. I've always bought slightly used. That's probably what I am going to go back to doing. Not crazy about any of the covid era builds...or all the new engines coming out. I'm well aware of the Tundra issue. Hyundai had...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

I don't really have an opinion on oil. Not really. RP served me well for years and years, but that doesn't mean I'm married to it. I ran a Chevy Silverado over 300k miles in 12 years of mostly city driving using it exclusively and never had an engine issue.....so that's something. But when I...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

For clarity: I used royal purple for most of the lifetime. Oil and filter. I know some people here claim it "doesn't have a good reputation" but that's not been my experience. Been using it in every vehicle since 2005 or so and this is the first problem I've had with parts that need oil. I did...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

You're both right, IMHO. It depends on the tick. A tick can be caused by a dozen different things, all related to the lifters/cam system. A tick like mine, caused by poor hardening of the cam, isn't going to cure the tick because it's caused by physical damage. Same goes if the roller is...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

I hear ya. Unfortunately, I made the decision to get rid of the truck. It's been more problems than it's worth. This is just the nail in the coffin for me. I'm on my fourth rear window. Finally did the DIY fix with Permatex. That worked for a while, but it's starting to show signs of needing...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

I switched up to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum a while back, though a majority of my time with this engine was Royal Purple. I used RP in every vehicle I ever owned. Managed to get a Silverado to over 300k with RP..... so RP can't be all that bad. Better than bargain oil, anyway. I would definitely...

What could cause this damage to the cam???

Appreciate the insight, friends. I've heard of spalling (in general terms, not specific to these cams) But still seemed bizarre the pit would be that defined and not cause any damage to the roller.... yet. Has Mopar updated or changed suppliers for the oem cams to fix that casting defect...

What could cause this damage to the cam???

Thanks. I was going to put all this in that thread, but figured the unusual damage outside of what most people talk about with the cams here was worth it's own thread. But yea, this has been a long process full of dealer shenanigans, Mopar shipping issues and a roller coaster of hope and...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

CORRECTION: My bad. I was looking at the files on my borescope wrong. That photo did NOT come from 6 or 4. It came from cylinder 8. Sorry about that inaccuracy. I was pouring sweat and really frustrated at the time, so I thought I was looking at the files from 6, but hey.... I do dumb things...

What could cause this damage to the cam???

Got an odd one. I had the hemi tick. Once I was sure it wasn't exhaust, I set about pulling the cylinder head. The valvetrain was fine, no bent push rods, no obvious signs of wear, even the valves looked surprisingly good. I pulled out the lifters, expecting to see a seized roller.... but no. To...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

Update: it's 100% a problem with those two MDS lifters in 6 and 4. Something told me to send the borescope back down and manually turn the engine again. Missed this the first time, it probably got lost in the glare from the scope light. But the lobe on 4 and 6 has this damage. No damage on any...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

At this point, it doesn't make much difference. Lol. Maybe there is an internal lifter hydraulic failure unrelated to the pin. Who knows. We are at the point they are getting replaced anyway. I've heard different things from different Ram techs. My buddy has a friend who's been a Ram tech for...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

I've watched a bunch of his vids. Can't imagine it being anything else. The way they are that would mean one lifter is active and the other is deactivated....meaning one valve would still be functioning in that cylinder. Don't seem right to me. Deactivating the cylinder would shut off both...

Help with the ole tick tick tick

Much as I would like to do the MDS delete, it's not really financially viable for me. If these new lifters get me 70k miles like these old ones did, I'll be over 140k and ready to look for a new truck anyway. Till then I'll just be using the the gear limit switch trick, or tow/haul to keep the...
