After waiting for months, the results are in. Ram Trucks has officially released the EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. The third-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 helps the Ram 1500 achieve a rating of 32 miles per gallon (mpg) highway, 22 mpg city for 4×2 models.
The new third-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 steps up the fuel economy rating compared to its predecessor by 3 mpg on the highway. Although the new EcoDiesel V6 falls just short of matching the GM 3.0-liter Duramax I-6’s 33 mpg highway rating, the EcoDiesel makes up for it since the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 diesel models with its 460 lb.-ft. of toque only have a maximum towing capacity of 9,300 lbs. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel makes 480 lb.-ft. and has a maximum diesel towing capability of 12,560 lbs.
“The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel offers the best torque and towing among all half-ton diesel trucks,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “Now with a 10-year track record, the Ram brand has emerged as a truck powertrain technology leader. The all-new EcoDiesel engine and Ram 1500 eTorque mild-hybrid powertrains deliver outstanding fuel efficiency alternatives for our Ram 1500 customers.”
But let’s face it, 80% of the full-size pickups on American roads are four-wheel-drive (4×4) models. When it comes to the official ratings on the 4×4 equipped EcoDiesel models, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 4×4 achieves an official rating of 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city. That matches the GM twins for best-in-class highway ratings in the 4×4 segment, while still providing more towing capability.
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickups can also have the best fuel range in its class, thanks to the optional 33-gallon fuel tank, which allows over 1,000 miles of range between fillups.
The new 2020 model year also marks the first time since Ram Trucks started offering a diesel in their half-tons back in the 2014 model year, that the diesel powerplant is available across the entire line of Ram 1500 models. That’s right, it doesn’t matter if you are driving a work-rated Tradesman, luxury-oriented Limited, or the off-roading Rebel model, the EcoDiesel is available.
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts at $36,890 USD for the Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD, plus $1,695 destination. The EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option, or $3,000 premium over the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 eTorque ($3,300 on Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Rebel and Laramie base models).
The 2020 Ram 1500 is backed with a five-year /100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty. The powertrain limited warranty covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair a covered powertrain component – engine, transmission, and drive system. The standard three-year / 36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for the Ram 1500, from the body to the electrical system.
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will join the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Crew Cab which is also offered with the previous-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel. Pricing for the Ram 1500 Classic EcoDiesel (Crew Cab 4×2) starts at $39,140, plus destination.
