Thieves Are Continuing To Steal Ram 1500 Pickups From Plant At An Alarming Rate

SHAP Lot, A Hot Spot For Auto Theft...

For the past several years, Stellantis (i.e. FCA) holding lots located near its Detroit assembly facilities have continued to be hot spots for vehicle thefts. It seems like every other week there is some kind of theft or attempt to steal high-end vehicles out of what is supposed to be secured and protected holding lots.

This morning, the Macomb County Scanner (MCR) reported a heavy police presence in the area of 17 Mile Road and Mound Road on the north side of the Stellantis Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP). The SHAP facility is home to the production of the award-winning Ram 1500 (DT) pickup trucks.

A photo released with the MCR statement showed a brand-new White 2023 Ram 1500 TRX entangled into a face that appeared to be located on the assembly complex’s lot.

On Saturday, a deputy patrolling the I-96 corridor near Howell Township ran the plate of a Granite-colored 2023 Ram 1500 Limited Night Edition and noticed that the plate was registered to a stolen vehicle from Detroit in December.

As the deputy approached the vehicle to conduct a traffic stop, it abruptly exited I-96 onto Highland Road where deputies performed a high-risk traffic stop to take the two occupants into custody. The driver, a 26-year-old male from Detroit, admitted to knowing the vehicle was stolen and was subsequently lodged for receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle.

According to authorities, the plate on the truck was registered to a stolen GMC Envoy, and the truck appeared to be stolen from the SHAP complex at an earlier unknown date.

The stop was initiated about 60 miles west of the SHAP facility.
