So, for the last couple of years, I've occasionally seen little footprints around my engine bay, especially the engine cover.

I naturally assumed it was a mouse or a rat, luckily I never saw any damage, chewed wires, etc. So I didn't bother too hard to get rid of him.

But one day I was testing a new cordless security cam and thought lets see that mouse, well as you can see in the vid, it wasn't a mouse, but a big fat cat sized Racoon!!! I setup the camera now to set off a light and alarm anytime he tries to sneak in, it scares him off immediately, and the occurrences have dropped to maybe once a week or so.

So just to let you know, if you see footprints in your engine bay, it may not be a mouse.

I admire your patience. I suppose the ole shotgun is a little too drastic?

Lol, no shotgun because I'm afraid to damage anything.

However, when the alarm goes off (I get an alert on my phone), usually around midnight, by the time I run down the stairs and into the driveway, little guy is too far away to hit with the water gun I use to scare off cats.

As long as there is no damage, I'll take it easy with him. Looks like he is just trying to get a breather from his nightly trash bin scrounging, but the alarm on the camera is definitely making him think twice in going in there anymore. Hoping he gives up after a couple of weeks.

I've had something try to make a nest out of the battery blanket, I think it's a squirrel. So far all its done is chew up the blacket and the battery strap on the 2nd battery. If I catch it, im making a hat

I had something chewing the battery blankets.

I put an old pill bottle with holes drilled and peppermint oil soaked cotton balls inside near each battery and haven't had any issues since.

wow... maybe i should get one of those peppermint thing in there too...
but my racoon family hangs out on the roof of my house and my garage LOL

Peppermint oil is great, especially against mice and rats, but raccoons can get used to it.

Definitely worth a try.
as long as continue to stay on the roof i'm not too worried.
i also got a stray cat hanging out in my backyard too so hopefully mice and rats are taken care of.

i hate dealing with chewed wires... always headaches.

I've had a cat spend time in my engine bay and my neighbor killed one on start up prior to my resident. Now I have a bird or birds using my truck cover for nesting material. It's and older cover that's worn in spots but I still throw it over my newer cover. Newer cover took a little hit from the bird but it is not very vulnerable to tearing..

I'm going to try that, I don't need any chewed up wiring harnesses

Using wireless cameras for monitoring and then using lights to deter Raccoons. That's a truly brilliant idea!!!
