Hey all,
This is my first v8 and more specifically hemi. Are the lifters really loud accross the board for these engines. When the engine goes into eco mode its really loud. To the point I turn eco off if the windows are down because I don’t even hear the exhaust or regular engine rumble just lifters. Is everyone experiencing this? I have one of the early builds and wasn’t sure if I fall into the bad batch of oil filters or if these engines just have really loud lifters. Once I get into the 3k rpm range I can finally hear the hemi and not just the clicking of lifters. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, generally the 5.7 has lifter chatter (more so after the first time you notice it off course) but not like what you're describing. Check your oil level, first sign of it being low are chatty lifters. My '09 5.7 sounds like a typewriter at startup until the oil gets moving.

Agreed, my '14 rattled like crazy at startup, but would quiet down once oiled up. What you are describing is not normal. Check your oil level, and if good, take it in to the dealer.

Hey Rebel Mike,
I checked the oil and its within the recommended range. I think I am just going to switch over to full synthetic penz plat today. Walmart has a deal on 5w-20 for 22 dollars. Hoping this will calm it down. I just hit 1800 miles so its time for the break-in oil change anyway.

I would always suggest a quick filter swap. As stated make sure oil level is good as first step. If it’s not ready for an oil change just swap the filter with a good one. My choice would be the Mobil M1-113A for the 5.7 hemi. Excellent anti drain back construction.

Nighthawk, I’ve never seen an engine where you can change the filter without draining/losing the oil? Are you saying the filter can be changed on this motor without draining oil?

My lifters are pretty loud as well. When the truck is in ECO; I can hear the rattle (almost like a spark knock). I thought maybe this was the way the 5.7 is. My engine runs fine and my MPG is great. I had the first oil change about 500 miles ago with full synthetic; but it hasn't really made a difference.

At start up you will hear it almost every time especially if the truck has been sitting around for a week or so (like your on vacation etc). As far as after that initial start I never heard it in my 09 Challenger R/T and I never hear it on the truck either. To me if it seems excessive to you, take it in and get it on record with the dealer.

Some old Ford engines had a problem they called "Marbling" and it had to do with detonation from carbon build up on the top of the pistons. The only way to fix it is to run very specific cleaners through the engine and even then, it wasn't a guarantee the "marbling" would go away.

It literally sounds like there is a little elf in the block shaking a can full of water and marbles. It can also be compared to how a diesel engine sounds.

My 5.7 sounds exactly the same when I give it gas. It's loud enough to hear in the cab. The tick at startup that goes away fairly quickly is what we Mopar folks call the "Hemi Tick". Very common and will not cause any harm to your engine. It's caused by a few things. The first is the length of the pushrods. They're a little short from the factory and only by a few thousandths(enough). The second cause is the way the oiling system works on the Hemi. Neither of these will hurt the engine according to Chrysler.

This is, however, the first time I have ever heard a Hemi "marbling". It is a little worrying to say the least.

It makes me question how this truck was treated before I bought it. Like someone drove it locked in to a low gear with high RPM's for extended periods of time. Which will completely wear a valve train out prematurely.

... another reason I run 91 and never 87 .. 89 if I need to ..

I was told by a "certified technician" that it isn't the lifters, it is the exhaust chattering at startup .. I tried not to laugh (being an old Chevy guy I KNOW what lifter clicking sounds like) .. so it was weird that he would say that out loud.

Odds are its not the lifters you are hearing but the natural sound of the hemispherical design. The valves are on a different angle on Hemis this produces a very distinct sound when the noise bounces off of things and comes back to you. If you dont hear it at idle with the windows down and only when there is something for the sound to bounce off of I bet this is what you are hearing.

I have had several Hemis over the years and the first I thought I had lifter noise till I talked to an old school dodge mechanic. If you do some research on the hemi design you will find this info.

So 2 evenings ago I'm driving along and I hear a ticking sound. Thought it was coming from traffic but put my window down and passed a few vehicles and realized it was my new truck making the sound. I decided to get it home so drove the 10 miles back to the garage. Parked and let it run a few more seconds while I got out to listen, sounds like noisy lifters, pretty loud. Called dealer yesterday and drove the 20 miles without issue. Checked oil beforehand and there was plenty, no leaks found, etc. Service writer thought it was an exhaust manifold issue, but senior technician thought it was lifters. I was given a rental and went home. An hour later the advisor called to tell me the problem was diagnosed, by ear, and that they would be replacing all of the hydraulic lifters, as they didn't know which ones were bad. Then I was told these lifters are on national back-order.......I asked if they would be tearing into the motor right away to look things over, or waiting until the parts come in? Yup, wait til the parts come. Hopefully they won't find it's something else once they open the motor up! Should I be afraid of this motor? My 2018 was absolutely trouble-free for 2 years and 35000 miles. Why would the lifters fail after only 4000 miles? This truck gets treated very well, has only commuted and nothing on the hitch yet. Anybody know where I can find 16 lifters in stock?

Nope, just reminds me of any of my Chevy 350s --- tick tick tick ..

if the sound went away as the engine warmed up - it'd most likely be the exhaust manifold bolts (they break a lot)
Drove my last Hemi RT for 3 years and had the tick.
It is covered, so they will call you when they get them in -- do NOT allow them to order from outside sources -- my local dealer tried, and got some crazy "fakes" that looked legit but were made in another country and were worse then the proper ones.

The tech will pull the oil "pump" and also check the oil in the pan to see if there are any metal filings -- then the engine would be replaced.

2 1/2 weeks waiting for new lifters. Dealer replaced all lifters on driver's side. Got the truck back and runs fine, no noise. They told me they've done 4 trucks with this issue. Hoping it was just a bad batch.....
