HI,

I'm in Australia and we just had released here the 2018 Ram 1500 with a right hand conversion by RAM authorised factory in Australia. Prices are $100,000 AUD or $75,000 USD for the Laramie V8.

My question is should I wait for the 2019 Gen 5 model? Is there really that much difference outside of aesthetics? Also how long could that wait be as I don't know how long the Gen 4 factory will remain operational.

Cheers

There are extreme differences between the 2018 and 2019. I cannot believe you have to pay $75,000 USD for a 2018. How crap!! They are like $35,000 here in the USA

The Warren factory that makes the Gen 4 truck is staying open. They are producing a 2019 Gen 4 and badging it as the "Ram 1500 Classic".

The Gen 5 is a full chassis and interior redesign. It is bigger, lighter, tows more, quieter inside, more technology.

You can buy either style in 2019. I'm not sure about RHD models though.

Vehicles imported from the US to Australia cost huge money.

For example:

2010 Camaro, $70k https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Chevrolet-Camaro-2010/SSE-AD-4484591/?Cr=3

2002 Mustang Cobra convertible $40k https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Ford-Mustang-2002/SSE-AD-5357795/?Cr=18

When I was in Australia I was getting the idea of importing vehicles having them converted to RHD and selling them down there. Fox Body Mustangs were going for almost 100k when I was down there.

To the OP, the 4th Gen is a good truck but if I was in your shoes I'd wait for the 5th Gen to become available. The 5th Gen is a complete overhaul and while the 4th Gen is a good truck there is almost no comparison to the 5th Gen.

I know, the question is how long do I have to wait before the Aussie factory authorised (ASV) guys move over to gen 5. There might be other guys doing conversions late next year the earliest on the Gen5 2019. Still a while off I guess. Gonna play the waiting game for another 6 months and see.

Admitedly, the Aussie laramie only has the rambox, cover, gear ratio, paint colour as the only options. As such it comes standard with spray in bedliner, convenience pack, sunroof, V8 engine, satnav, 10 speaker sound, rear screen defroster, side steps, trail brake control, park sense, remote start, all as standard for the price of $75k. So really its quite specced up which in the USA would take it closer to $45-50k as we wouldnt get leasing discounts. So really its a 50% increase to import it and convert it as opposed to double.

It's justified by the average wage we get here. $50k USD per annum for a plumber/ carpenter.
Thats the same wage a plumber makes here int he USA and possibly they even make more. So I would say the wages are pretty much equivalent between our countries.
