19 Ram 5.7 engine using too much oil. Ended up getting new engine under warranty due to a ring and piston issue. Alls well now

50% on the oil life indicator from the last oil change in April. I was just stating that the truck had 25k miles with consumption issues.

625 miles on my truck. Checked all fluids for the first time in preparation for an 1100 mile trip. Engine oil was a half quart below full. Maybe a low fill from the factory? I’ll keep an eye on it.
Update: Added the 1/2 quart to top it off before my 1100 mile trip towing our travel trailer. Checked oil level at the end of the trip, nothing was consumed.

I have 18000 miles on my 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 L engine. Bought in July of 2018 and have had all service calls at dealership. I notice that about half way through my engine oil life and when I check the engine oil level, I end up adding 3 quarts. I usually check the level every 3000 miles. Nothing burning. Is this normal to burn through about 4 quarts of oil in 10,000 miles? I had a Chevy big block that you had to check every fill up because that large of an engine used oil.

Next timee I take it in I am going to have it checked. I already had the top end engine seal replaced under warranty. Hoping I did not buy too early in the 5th gen before bugs were worked out.

Update Aug 20, 2019...Vehicle continues to use about 1 Qt every 750 miles. some soot, no leaks. Dealership is conducting oil consumption test and will return vehicle at 1100 mile mark. Five other 2019 Ram 5.7 Hemi owners stated they use maybe one quart per 8000 miles. Will be looking at early work conducted by dealership to repair issue with cylinder/valve. Maintaining all documentation, and maintaining a professional dialog with dealership. I have 25k on vehicle and think it is warranties for 36k.

So here's a pretty good case study for you. I bought an 09 Challenger R/T new on Dec 31st of 2008. I drove it 107k miles and traded it in this January for the 2019 Ram. It NEVER ever burned any oil in all that time. I always used synthetic oil and changed the oil religiously every 6500 miles.

I was really torn about trading it in too since it was such a great car. When i traded it in it still ran like the day it was born. Someone somewhere is driving her and smiling! :D

The bumper to bumper warranty is 36K, but powertrain is extended 60K.

In other words, anything non-engine or tranny related needs to be fixed before 36K, but you have a lot more time on your engine / tranny / Diff.

Also documenting a known issue before your 36000, if it’s left unfixed/resolved is covered

Update 10 September, dropped off last week to analyze oil consumption after 1100 miles. Came back one quart used in 1000 miles and dealership stated it was within standards. Came to pick it up today and brought with me the FCA engine bulletin provided by Jv77. Service bulletin 09-007-18 states one quart per 2000 miles is norm. They just Informed me I would get another rental car and they will keep truck for more tests. I wonder what will happen?

Update on sept 10th. Oil consumption test completed and 1 qt at 1000 miles. Service acceptable consumption based on VIN engine report. I came I and provided FCA service bulletin 13-007-18 that says all gas engines should be less than 1 qt per 2000 miles. The decided to keep truck for further test and called back my rental car. Wonder what will happen. They did not know sbout the bulletin

Update. New engine block provided due to piston ring issues. Back on the road and thanks for posting the new oil consumption test. It saved the day because dealer thought it was within specs originally 99FBBFB4-BD31-499F-A489-E030BEA94EC1.jpeg

All repaired and back on road. It had to have engine replaced due to some type of ring issue. Ram did a great job.

Bought a new 2019 in September 2019, I just checked my oil at 5300 miles and there was almost no oil even on the dipstick, way past the low level. Had the oil changed at 1600 miles because it was recommend to remove any break-in debris. Not used to having to add quarts of oil between changes and was shocked to see it was that low after 3,700 miles and 60% oil life remaining. This is crazy, going to have the dealer do an oil consumption test after getting it changed tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your issue, glad the OP was taken care of.
I have seen others post about changing the original oil on a new truck early to "remove break-in debris". I understand the concept, but that is what you have an oil filter for. The manufacturer(s) use break-in additives in the new oil and should be changed when the indicator says to change it at or around 25% life left. As mentioned above, you need to seat the rings on a new engine. Do a fair amount of spirited driving when new, which I did then I changed my filter to a Wix XP #57060XP early and added a 1/2 quart 5W20 Full Synthetic MS6395 Spec. until I got to around 3000 miles and did first full change to full synthetic MS6395 spec oil and Wix XP filter. I haven't noticed any oil consumption. Did my second change at 9372 miles @ ~25% life left on indicator.

~24k miles

since last dealer oil change I’ve added approximately 2 qts in ~7500 miles. I just had the dealer change the oil, after arriving home checked the dipstick to get a baseline for the future oil burn. Last change I didn’t check it this closely after getting home because this truck did not burn oil. After reading some posts here I’m having that bad feeling I might be next? I followed the break in and don’t own a trailer. Dealer has changed oil since new.

Oil level test scheduled Jan 19.
