Ok, so I've seen a lot of posts on this, my question is the 3.92 overrated or is the 3.21 under rated as far as towing capacity ?
3100 difference ??
I'm looking at a 2019 laramie, with crew cab and 6.4 bed, but it has the 3.21 rear end gears.
Looks like around 8100 max towing.
I know I will run out of payload and GVWR as those come into play, but is this truck with the 3.21 really that much weaker pulling more weight .
Problem is , I wont tow anything near the limit 95 percent of the time. But maybe once s year or two, I want to pull a 40-50 hp utility tractor , to be purchased after truck purchase, so I'm trying to calculate that future purchase, it will be anywhere from 7500 to 9000 pounds with trailer I'm thinking.
Has anyone pulled 8000 with the 3.21 rear ?
I'm guessing it's the long distant uphills where you have to maintain momentum. that the 3.92 would excell, holding 65mph.
I really would like to know how well the 3.21 would hold speed from actual experience.
Thanks.

Today the 3.21 andthe 3.92 will both tow just fine.

The 3100 extra pounds comes into play in higher elevations, steep grades and is more important to coming back down those grades.

Depending on location and driving style, a person with a 3.21 will be as happy towing as a person with 3.92, just as someone with 3.92 may get better mileage than someone with 3.21.

It is really personal preference.

Unless you plan to tow something that weighs over 13100 lbs combined, or tow regularly on steep grades...the 8spd is going to make the experience mute

Get the truck you want for the best deal that makes you happy.

Buy the truck you need for 363 days a year. The other 2, you can grin and bear it or even rent a truck.

No offense to anyone in particular ...... but I often see guys who own 2500s or even bigger for those 3-4 days a year they'll pull something. The rest of the year, they hate how large it is. Same thing with 8' beds. That's why you often see large trucks driven by women. The men don't want to deal with it daily so they take the family car and the wife uses the truck as a grocery getter.

Heck even the v6 is rated to tow 12900 combined and it weighs ~200 lbs less. Not a big difference in ratings between the v6/3.55 and the v8/3.21. I’m thinking the hemi 3.21 is underrated.

Just finished a 3900 mile trip through the Rockys. Wish I had the 3.92's My trailer is only 5400# and a 6% grade 7 miles long will work 3,4 & 5th too death. Oil temp goes to 242 and the cooling fan roars so loud , radio volume has to be raised 4#
If you tow a lot ;get the 3.92s
