I have been scouring the forums and the internet. My manual states MS 12991 and (API SP). In this forum everyone is stating that thier manual says (API SN). I just purchased the truck a couple of weeks ago and I am trying to find the correct oil and plan ahead. I can't seem to find any oil that meets both of these criteria. Does anyone know of an oil/brand I could use. Has anyone else seen this in their manual and is this a recent update to the owner's manual? I am also new to the forums concept, I used to buy Chiltons manuals for every vehicle I owned, I studied them to learn more about my vehicles but I figured I would try a more technological route with this one. Thanks in advance for any help!

My 2022 also says API SP. I looked into it recently and I believe its the updated version of API SN.

I spent some time checking and the only oil I found that lists API SP and MS-12991 is Quaker State Euro Full Synthetic 5w-40

API-SP will replace API-SN. API-SO already existed I believe it was for older engines? It’s just the next generation of API’s oil certification.

API-SO is for “standard oil” which is still sold in some regions which is why they skipped that letter.

API-SP is better at preventing LSPI (low speed pre ignition) in direct injection engines. And helps prevent timing chain wear.

Most oils with API-SN plus will get the SP certifications. Pennzoil euro 5w40 has updated to the SP certification, but some older stock may still have SN labels.

Any oil spec update generally includes all the previous oils. I don't know why specs matter though as SN oils are for gasoline engines and aren't rated at all for a diesel engine with soot or particulates or fuel dilution.

Took a screen shot of the 2022 service information. By the looks of it SN is still approved.

The factory/mopar oil part #68231020AA is only API SN, MS 12991 rated.

This oil is great stuff, and my Walmarts here sell it for $18 per 5 quart jug.

I beat the absolute **** out of this oil in a Gen 3 EcoDiesel and oil analysis afterward showed that it held up pretty well at 6,300 miles. For somebody who does normal driving cycles it would easily reach the 8,000 recommended intervals. Remember, 10,000 is an absolute MAX distance to go on oil and that's not the same as the recommended distance to go on oil.
